Some Xbox 360 Numbers for October
    by Matt Gibbs

Microsoft have released the Xbox 360 numbers for the month of October. Both software and accessory attach rates were up, and Splinter Cell Double Agent took the top selling title spot.

Based on NPD data for October, we have the following statistics:

    * The software attach rate has increased to 5.2 games per console.
    * Likewise, the accessory attach rate rose to 3.0
    * Splinter Cell: Double Agent was the the top selling Xbox 360 game for October, and not only that but it was the #2 title across all console platforms in the US.

The top 5 selling Xbox 360 titles for October were:

    1. Splinter Cell Double Agent (Ubisoft)
    2. Tiger Woods 2007 (EA)
    3. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Activision)
    4. Madden 2007 (EA)

That's a good thing, but once those are gobbled up, (PS3), which I think will be before the holidays, what will people do? Buy one of the other two, or wait for the PS3? I think if your moms and dads wanting to put something under the tree, you pick one of the two available.

I think the honeymoon period of the Wii will be a short one. A year from now when Halo 3, Mass Effect, MGS4 and others are available the Wii will have a hard time keeping up. I think the 360 is going to battle it out with the PS3 this generation (unless Blue Ray fails in which case the 360 might just win). MS has been on a three console takeover strategy. The 360 evens things out and the next round takes over. It wouldn't surprise me if MS takes over the drivers seat.

          Of course it's all conjecture.

            Playstation 3 vs. XBOX 360 - A Game Developer's Perspective - hardCOREware.net

Being a video game developer (I develop for both, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360) people ask me almost daily which platform I think is better. These are my personal feelings, in no way does this reflect my employer.

            Short answer: XBOX 360.

Long answer: Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. I think the XBOX 360 wins in every category.

Price: This is obvious; the XBOX 360 core is only $299. The PS3 is around $499 for the 20GB version. It comes with a hard drive, but you don’t need a hard drive to enjoy a lot of great games on the 360 so I think it’s fair to compare both core systems.

Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it’s quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU’s the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU’s on the PS3. I suspect a few years down the road some high budget, first party PS3 exclusive titles will come out that really take advantage of the SPU’s and do things the XBOX 360 can’t, but I don’t think the console is worth buying based on this speculation (for some it will be though, we'll have to wait and see how these games turn out).

How short do you expect it to be? One month? Two? A year? As long as Nintendo can keep pushing out fun and exciting games and keep EA on board while gathering more third party support, I think they can take back a big chunk of the market that they lost.

That's the key if they can keep third party support they should be fine.

Surveys indicate 60% of PS2 owners definitely plan to get a PS3 at some point. That number alone will surpass 360 sales.
The 360 has sold 2.5 million units in the US which is slightly less than the original Xbox at the same point in it's lifespan-the Xbox was going head to head with PS2 at the time and the 360 has had the "next-gen" market all to itself until this point. This has to be worrisome for Microsoft.
The attach rate for the 360 and its' accesory sales are good,so the platform itself isn't in trouble, but first place in the next generation is probably a pipe dream at this point.

Unfortunately even if the 360 turns out to be a better system (I have no reason to doubt Boltman's expert opinion), the "Playstation" name alone seems to guarantee more success. Shouldn't the guy who came up with the "Playstation" name get a $10 million bonus?

If that 60% rings true, then you are probably right. Although, I know a couple of nephews who had PS2's who are now in colledge can't afford the PS3. Their parents bought them the PS2's, the parents aren't participating this go around. Right now, both agree they want the 360.

I can't see the PS3 doing as well as PS2 did for sales figures down the road. I'm sure the Wii and the 360 will put a dent into Sony's overall sales vs the PS2.

I think Nintendo will lose ground this time next year. It is going to be hard to compete with Halo, MGS, etc. Also, the newness of the Wii controls will eventually wear off. This is just my opinion, but I really think the third party support will not be as strong, long-term, as people think it will be.`

The thing about Sony is that even if they come close to that 60% number (and I doubt it is that high), it does not seem that Sony can keep taking the blows. They are a company that most analysts say is in trouble. How much of a loss can they take this time around? If Blue Ray fails that could be a crushing blow. Time will tell.

Overall I think the 360 will be very successful this season and really outperform expected results next Xmas with Halo 3.

7 Million 360 sold already and there hasnt been a price drop yet. I wouldnt call that unsuccessful.

With the PS3 being somewhat of a letdown, the 360 will continue to grow.

The 360 has already won this round as far as I am concerned. Sony cannot spend money on the microsoft level and eventually they will be forced out of the gaming industry.

Only time will tell if the fun factor of the Wii control system will wear off, but from the impressions I've read, it feels as if more people are more satisfied with their purchase of the Wii than the other systems (I'm only including impressions from the launch period). Nintendo has a stream of games lined up for the Spring of next year which will keep people interested at least until then. I think once a Mario game releases, there will be a spike in sales for the console. I think Nintendo has realized that third party support can make or break a system and hopefully they will pursue that. So far, it seems EA is helping out a lot and I hope other companies climb on board and take advantage of the control system.
