    PS3 Impressions, part three

Post them here. Anyone going off topic to talk about the 360 or the Wii or anything else, you will be taking a break from the forums. There is your only warning.

It's simple, if you don't own a PS3, or can't provide assistance about the PS3, then don't post.

    Re: PS3 Impressions, part three

Well since i'm waiting on my component cables to show up I decided to get some time in with the PS3 at my local EB. My impressions regarding the controller:

I like it but it sucks there's no rumble but I like the to bottom paddles/flippers L2/R2. In fact I prefer this over the DC and 360 triggers. They're responsive and have a good feel to it.

I played around with the Motorstorm demo and the controller did feel light but not cheap or that it was about to break. Using both bottom paddles to brake and accelerate felt good and was responsive.

Where things got ugly on the controller was employing the tilt feature. It wasn't responsive and felt like it was tacked on to the game. I turned it off and went back to using the Left Analog Stick.

Motorstorm looked nice and was pretty fun which kinda reminds me of ATV Fury which I like anyway. Resistance was fun as well which kinda reminds me of COD2 meets the Aliens and it looked decent running in 720p. I'm puzzled why a Sony 1st party game wasn't running in 1080i or 1080p.

Rod, I believe that NBA'07 runs in 1080p, but I could be wrong.

I think you're right but I was referring to Resistance. I think the game would have looked even better running at a higher resolution.

The interface for the system isnt as user friendly as 360 but I'm going to chalk that up to the fact that this is MS's second year of it and Sony's first. I THink a lot of things will be patched and fixed.

I'm pleased with the graphics so far from Resistance, the F1 game, and the replays of NBA 07 (the game itself doesnt look too good but the replays look phenomenal)

I'm planning on pikcing up NBA 2k7 soon to see how that looks.

The system itself is beautful. The design is really sleek and I like the motion sensored buttons. The system gets a little hot so you gotta keep it where air can flow to it.

I'm split on the controller. I've loved the Dual Shock since PS2 but I'm having trouble geting used to the lack of rumble and its light weight. The Bluetooth signal never falters and the charge lasts a very long time. I hope game makes good use of the Sixaxis system but when using it to do moves in the NBA 07 demo it seemed a little unnatural. It should be beter for racing and flight sim games though.

I dont like how you cant do other things while demos and patches download but I hope thatll be fixed with an online update. I dont have a wireless netrwork so I can't comment on the WiFi feature yet.

Bottom line is: is the system worth the $600+ I paid for it: Not yet. The lack of games available and some interface problems plague te system. But am I happy with it: Definitly. Its a definite step up from the PS2 and is definitly on par with with 360. I have a lot of optimism for the system just because Sony created a huge following with the PS2 and I thought the exclusives for the PS3 (Metal Gear, etc) were way above the Microsoft exclusives.

My only concern is with BLu Ray. That was one of the biggest selling points of the system but I cant hel but have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that its going to be anothr Beta debacle and HD-DVD will be much more popular. I just cant see two formats surviving for an extended period of time.

Good points Dee but something I believe Sherik said about the interface. Both User Interface have there plus and minuses.

I was messing around with the U.I. a bit at EB. Even though it reminds me of PSP it's logical and you either scan left or right then up and down to find what your looking for.

While the 360 UI at first glance looks user friendly which it is, sometimes things aren't were they need to be. I had to ask here where to find how you change your Theme or User Pics. I later found that you can do this from several ways from the dash board.

I agree with you, PS3 updates will be the norm and I think the system in due time will turn out real nice it just feels like it came out of the oven 30 minutes to soon.

In the dvd options there is an option for pan and scan or letterbox. Which should I choose? I have a widescreen t.v btw. Thanks.

Thanks soldier. One more question. For some reason I can't connect to the internet. I set up an account and when I go to network settings, it says the internet is enabled. But when I click on the browser, nothing happens. Any suggestions? Thanks much.

Good find gschwendt. I wonder if this contract is like Microsoft's for unlimited repairs during the life of the warranty?

The six axis does seem like a more natural fit for racing/flying games... but I'd rather have the rumble feature v. the six axis. I really hope that they bring back the rumble feature on the controllers.

                            Sony admits PS3 upscale issue

It looks like Sony has heard the complaints and will fix the problem with a future firmware update.

Sony America has acknowledged that there's a problem with upscaling on the PlayStation 3 in its current form, and has pledged to fix it.

Basically, some older HDTVs are happy to do 1080i (interlaced, 1920x1080 resolution) but not 720p (progressive, 1280x720 resolution). The PS3's reaction to this ought to be to "upscale" the 720p image so it's what the 1080i user sees.

However what actually happens is that the PS3 kicks out a 480p image, meaning that people's televisions are left displaying what amounts to not much more than a PS2-size image.

(To put it another way, these people reckon they should be seeing 921,600 pixels, but in actual fact they're only getting 408,960. And they want those extra 512,640 pixels, boy howdy.)

Sony says that this lack of upscaling happens because the television itself needs to have a 720p input in order to display games that don't support the higher resolution 1080p (progressive, 1920x1080) image. (It's good to see everyone's trying to make this simple and easy to comprehend, isn't it?)

"This is an issue on the side of the individual television sets," a statement from SCEA confirms, "which do not accept 720p input, so when a game outputs an HD signal only at 720p, these select TVs have to display the game at 480p instead."

All of which gibberish, however, can be happily set aside given that Sony's working on a solution that will be rolled out in a forthcoming firmware update.

That's a sound move by Sony. There are a lot of people with old school HDTVs that have a native resolution of 1080i...and to pay $500-600 and only get 480p would make me do a 180 turn to the 360.

I got a chance to play NBA 07 at Walmart. Gameplay was a bit sluggish, but the visuals were good, especially the replays. I wish they had NBA 2k7 as a demo...
