What equals "Next Gen"?

I saw FootballForever make a comment in the Madden forums that the Wii isn't next gen, it's a Gamecube with a different controller. So, graphics are next gen then?

What I mean is, what makes Next Gen games..."Next Gen".

Graphics? The controller? Achievements? Blu Ray? HD-DVD? What is it?

Please, don't turn this into "Such and such system is better than that system because such and such". Just your opinion on what makes these systems, the Wii, the 360, and the PS3 truly next gen.

I think its any system that advances on current technology. The PS3 and 360 are next-gen, because of the graphical power and processing power of the systems is better then any console before it. I would consider the Wii next-gen because nintendo reinvented the way you "control" the game. There has never been a system before that could take your movements and translate that into gameplay on the screen.

Meh...although there has never been a console that allowed you to translate your controller movements onto the screen, this technology is'nt all to new. If you go to some of the high-tech arcades that are still around, you would find a few games that allow you to control the movements on screen with some sort of device. For example, there is a boxing game where you punch with two physical gloves, a ping pong game that gives you a paddle to swing at the screen and I've seen a fighting game that translates your body movements onto screen. Where the Wii is innovative at is it streamlined everything into the Wiimote and those nunchucks and thats as far as it gets IMO.


As far as the question of what is next gen, its really tough to say. If history has taught us anything, I would say that it has to do with graphical power. Remember when everything was 8 Bits. To 16 Bits to 32 Bits to 64 Bits to wherever the hell we are now. After all, the thing that gamers want most is realistic graphics. And with each new console released, that seems to be the number one priorty. Except for the Wii of course.

good point I have to agree with you. When I look at all the generation of systems, graphics and gameplay combined, come to mind. Going from 2D to 3D not only added great graphics, but added new gameplay mechanics.

Wii has some innovation no doubt, it's hard to say.

I have to agree that overall next-gen is the advancement of technology. The Wii certainly fits into this category.

The next-gen of gaming won’t be defined by massive environments and enormously dense, lush worlds, but by the emotional experience each player has when spending time with a title.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Now that the Wii, PS3, and XBox 360 are all out, to me, "Next Gen" is whatever will come out AFTER those consoles. The three consoles I mentioned are now "Current Gen", because they've all been released already.

I cannot wait til people stop using that "Next Gen" phrase. It drives me crazy! It's not the "Next Gen" anymore, folks! It's here NOW!

For me this is what NEXT-GEN means...

I dont get it. I had good emotional experiences with plenty of games before. Sure, games are becoming more and more like movies but the movie element has always been there in the past. By emotional experience, what exactly do they mean? New game design, innovation, sillicon valley?

I agree too. 360,ps3, and Wii are now this gen. The xbox,cube and ps2 will slowly backout of the picture and be remembered fondly like systems of old. In a couple of years we will start hearing about the "next gen" nintendo penis.... Giggas that is just too good LOL!!!
