If you have a bad launch, there's no getting those fans back after they've written off the game.

The surprising thing to me is, as people's lives become more busy in today's society, the MMORPG industry has gravitated towards more casual-play-friendly games in recent times, such as instanced games like Guild Wars, City of Heroes, etc. In those games, you can actually put in 30-60 minutes and accomplish something in the game. In WoW, you'll spend those 30-60 minutes running to where you want to go and then log off - it's not casual-friendly.

Having been a former "powergamer" in Everquest and Camelot, I can honestly say that I'd be pretty stoked about WoW if I had massive amounts of time to play it because those games are what you put into them and WoW has a lot of content going for it. But alas, I don't. But apparently a lot of people do.
I disagree. Wow is very shallow compared to the other MMO's out there right now.

What they did right is streamline the game and remove most of the annoying things from previous MMO's and make the game polished. Then they got the carrot on a stick formula just right. That is what keeps people coming back.

And the 1-60 games is where it shines. You can play for 15 or 20 minutes and accomplish more and advance farther than in any other current MMO. Once you hit 60, however, all thats left is raiding and pvp- hopefully the expansion pack addresses this as they say it will.

Dont ask Terry or myself how many times we have gone through the same quests leveling a toon in WOW.

My favorite game of all time. Been playing it for over two years and it is still like crack to me. With the Expansion droping tomarrow I fear my life may be over

What makes it so great? The interaction with others, the dungeons, learning new strategies to take out end game content... and of course new gear. I am not sure why the other dislike it but raiding is great. There is something about bringing 20-40 peple together and everyone doing their "job" that is very rewarding.

Just curious - very shallow compared to what? EQ is the only thing I can think of that rivals WoW's depth and most of the other games (CoH, GW, DAoC, D&D, etc) seem pretty shallow by comparison. So it's surprising to hear your feelings about the depth of WoW.

As for the end game problems, that's pretty much true of every MMORPG ever. Once the grind is over, all that's left is raiding for drops and PvP. Camelot tried to make things worthwhile from an endgame perspective with all the relic stuff, but their server implementation made the large-scale battles they hyped pretty much impossible.

                        Re: Someone explain to me...

I pretty much agree with Skirek when he described the depth of a MMO. One thing I've been in search of as a video gamer is a game with tons and tons of depth. The fact of being so overwhelmed with limitless options, quest and items is very well worth the money compared to a game that has 10-20 hours of linear gameplay with and no real incentive to do anything besides make it from point A to point B. The one and only MMO I've ever played was Final Fantasy and it was easy to see the appeal of one of these games. The depth and the interaction with other like-minded ppl is key. I just wish I had more time to actually play one.

I actually have a dream of a sports oriented MMO. Where all sports are included and linked in one big virtual world where you start off as a teen and work your way up to the pros in whatever sport you choose to play in and ultimately into the HOF. You would have to play pick-up games in order to increase your levels and join leagues which are the equivilent of quest. You could be a player, coach, reporter, commish or owner. You could possibly be the next Micheal Jordan, Wayne Gretzky or Dan Marino of the virtual sports universe. Now for those calling ppl nerds, since most of us are sports junkies, I bet this would appeal to you.

OK now that I have told you all my idea, you all most die. Expect powdery substance envelopes in the mail. MWUHAHAHAHAHA!

Thats the thing, you would'nt be able to increase things like passing ratings or awareness ratings if you hog the ball. And if you're picking squads for pickup games or even scouting players for your team, would you pick a guy who has jacked up shooting skills but is sub-par in everything else? Depending on what type of coach you are or team you're putting together, I guess. We're talking basketball right?
