The original Unreal Tournament (UT 99) on PC.

I remember firing it up for the first time and taking someone's head off with a sniper rifle without a hint of lag (also got broadband internet the same day).

Even six years later, UT was probably my most-played game of all time and I still was actively playing clan matches with the CTF sniper arena mod.

Console would be Chu Chu Rocket for the Dreamcast. Much less exciting game since it had tons of lag. It wasn't until NFL 2K1/NBA 2K1 that the Dreamcast's online service really took off. I bought pretty much every Dreamcast game that had online play since they were all like $10 - $30 due to the PS2 dominating sales.

Delta Force 2 on the PC. My gamer id was Menace**ARMY** Menace-Bps- etc etc and I joined and formed so many clans. I actually was one of the top players in that game. Everyday after school, every sick day, every holiday I would manage to get some DF2 in my life and be a menace to the delta force society lol. I remember getting so good I used trainers or "hacks" to beat(chase away) other hackers lol that were ruining the match I would put on my cape and save to the room. Ahhh those were the days.

              Don't really remember.

The earliest I can think back is dialing modem to modem to play Warcraft 2 with a friend.

I suppose online as in against random people through a game server is might be one of those shooter games like Unreal Tournament.

Star Wars: Republic Commando, the sequel was being made while the game was and ended up being canceled. It's the perfect game for people who like trolling online...by the way...

Counter-Strike, once it hit retail in 2000. It would have been Starcraft, except I didn't get the game until a few years after its release.

Not far behind: NHL 2000, the first sports game I ever played online.

I used to play Dark Forces II and Asheron's call on the old MSN Gaming Zone. The community in Asheron's Call was amazing, and spoiled me for other places I went.

I remember one game on battle of the bulge in a 64 player game i had about 70 kills to 4 deaths. Best I ever did.

This was my first great experience on online. I played the original warcraft: orcs and humans by directly connecting via modem to a friend. Wasn't a great experience.

I didn't get into online game until only a few years ago.

It was World at War. Ever since then I've been hooked on FPS online gaming, and WAW is still my favorite Call of Duty game.

Yeah - going back to those times, I did play online text games in the early 90's on bulletin boards.

I don't know if I really consider that "online", though - I think of online as connecting to the Internet and then to a game server, as opposed to dialing up to another person (like we used to do in the early 90's with bulletin boards, and games with modem capabilities).
