But would EA be able to stop supporting the 360 entirely like they refused to support Sega's Dreamcast? I don't know if they could considering the 360 is currently the leading console of this generation. Not supporting the underdog is one thing, but not supporting the current leader doesn't make much sense if they're going to lose that much of the market. I don't know if EA would be content with just pushing Wii and PS3 games quite yet. EA might actually need MS more than MS needs EA at the moment...though that can definitely change within months.

Re: Take Two Selling???
I honestly think this will all end with the appointment of a new CEO.
From there, I'm sure that person will lead Take 2 into some restructuring that will in turn possibly lead to certain divisions of Take 2 being "sold off."Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Re: Take Two's pending sale
Honestly, there's only 1 thing on the 360 that EA has a hold over.
NCAA Football.
NBA Live sucks, no doubt about it. Madden is overrated and gets by on name alone. March Madness is nowhere near College Hoops. FIFA is about equal with Winning Eleven, but has been showing improvements. Fight Night is meh, in terms of a boxing sim (which it is marketed as).
What does EA have? Aside from licenses, they have MVP Baseball that was a very good game in its latter pro incarnations. If The Show were made for all 3 consoles, it would be a best seller as the market stands now. However, if MS were to do this, and wanted to keep EA happy, they could just sell them the MLB rights for a cheap price. EA makes lots of money from their MVP game (I'd buy it over Baseball 2k any day), and MS gets the exclusives.badComment

Knocking out NBA2k and any other possible sports game from 2k would greatly benefit EA sports titles.Comment

Re: Take Two Selling???
yes it would. They'd kill off a competitor, thus making their franchises more money. They've put alot into madden and live, even partnering with ESPN and establishing tournaments for both, where people take their crappy games way to seriously.

It's not one or two guys that decide what's good for EA and what's not. It's a large group of shareholders who are probably growing leary of paying too much for yet another developer/license. Now picture the faces of the key shareholders when the following idea is pitched "so we have $1.2 billion in cash, and we're going to use somewhere between a quarter to one half of that cash to buy a developer and do nothing with it". I don't see them being to receptive to the idea.
Add in the fact that while revenues are going up, profits are way down, sometimes running in the red, and you have a situation where there may not be too many important people who think this is a good idea.Comment

The only benefit for EA would be to get Rockstar. Clearly, that's where Take 2's worth is. They could buy the portion of Rockstar and keep the name and production of the GTA series.
However, for them to buy 2K Sports and just sit on it would be foolish. For EA, getting the MLB license would benefit, but who knows what legal ramifications are there with the MLB. Would they just pass along the existing license to EA if they bought 2K Sports?
On the other hand though, and I know some think this is not the same as a game developer, but EA got a deal with ESPN and has done nothing significant with that. They are more or less sitting on that.
It has to do with EA's philosophy of business. If their attitude is to buy out all competition, then tapping into that 1 billion in cash makes sense. I happen to think that's how EA operates. They're willing to buy the name Jeep to include their vehicles in their war games. They're willing to pay top dollar on the NFL license, Arena Football, College Football, TIger Woods, NASCAR and anything else that puts them in position to financially dominate the market.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Re: Take Two's pending sale
Okay- here's what I don't understand. Why does NCAA 2007 360 get such a free pass in people's minds, and Madden 360 does not??
Its the same engine, same problems, same bad online play last year. Throw in a couple mascots and its a better game? How's that work? Same collision detection issues. Same receivers/defenders grinding against one another and not moving on some plays/coverages. Heck, and player names didn't even carry into online play on next gen. Graphics-wise, the NCAA 07 360 player models were essentially Madden 06 360 player models. (Think Balco-refugees with salty WWII veteran faces..)
So how is it that NCAA "has a hold" while Madden does not?
How is it that people who hate all these same things about Madden judge NCAA so differently?
I never could understand that.
But, like another poster said, EA's sports games aren't always bad. NHL 07 was awesome and raised the bar. Also, many people prefer EA for baseball.
So I know I'm not personally willing to throw out the baby with the Tiburon bathwater.Comment

Re: Take Two's pending sale
I don't think I've played a console game as much as I did NCAA 03 and 04.
06 and 07 got probably 1/20th of the playing time as those two. I dunno, something about the next-gen games hasn't drawn me. It might be a factor of my schedule but I still managed to fit in other games.

Re: Take Two's pending sale
NCAA football fans are simply RABID, and to me- they seemed to be willing to give NCAA football a "first time on Next Gen" last year pass that they didn't justify with Madden 07 (since it was sort of its second release)
But lost on many NCAA fans was....its the same engine.. and NCAA 07 360 even went so far as to simply re use the older models from Madden 06 360. (Not the slightly more refined/less "Balco" look of the Madden 07 models and faces.)
Yet, it had the exact same football problems, and online problems, and missing features from current gen.
But somehow it became known as a "solid game of football" and a "great first effort" for NCAA on next gen.
I guess the eye of the beholder is QUITE selective.
But NCAA Football fans are probably the most rabid bunch around.Comment

Re: Take Two's pending sale
I have never understood why the NCAA game is considered better. I mean I've rented the damn thing three times, bought a used copy of 06 last fall. I really though that there was something that I was missing but nope . . . same bad gameplay as Madden . . . nothing special there . . .Comment
