    Re: Fallout 3

I didn't hate the ending, but it certainly wasn't awesome like Mass Effect was.

I can see how some people are a little let down. With all the time put in, and the great atmosphere and storyline, I can see why people would want more.

That being said, it was utterly garbage like Fable 2 was.

Would it be a mistake to pick this up as a complimentary to Oblivion?

It's a bit short just like I'm sure you have read, but it's pretty much Oblivion with guns as much as I hate to say it. Except it has maybe 50% the content and in my opinion 50% the depth of Oblivion.
It is after all a wasteland and it definitely has all of the qualities a wasteland would offer lol which isn't much. I preferred the many city's and the lush colours of oblivion it's really a matter of taste.

I prefer Oblivion to Fallout...but still really enjoy Fallout. It's a good game, and you'll really like if you had fun with Oblivion.

Well, I'm still going through Oblivion (under 20 hours atm) so thats why I was asking if it would be a mistake to pick up Fallout soon or if I should wait.

Up to you really. I would get it, since it's cheap and would be a good alternative when you need a break from Fallout. Oblivion will keep you occupied for a much longer period of time for sure.

make sure you buy the GOTY edition too.

Nah. I have Oblivion (GOTY edition too), I was wondering if I should pick up Fallout 3 or wait until I finish going through Oblivion.

Well personally i would just play through Oblivion first and then later on when you need another RPG fix i'd pick up Fallout 3 when it's cheaper. They really are very similar in a lot of ways but it doesn't diminish either title for me and i have loved them both.

A good thing about a game like this is there is no online play so you don't need to get it early while there are masses of people playing it online before they move onto the next "in" thing.

I liked it much more than Oblivion. For as impressive as Oblivion was, it felt like generic Tolkien-inspired fantasy. Having a ton of history to read doesn't automatically make a fantasy world interesting.

Fallout really takes an interesting road by mixing real world with an alternate, 50's-inspired history. The world is impressive in its bleakness. When you get to a high area and can look around, the devastation is so incredible, it adds a lot of atmosphere to the game.

Overall, it's one of my favorite games I've played. I spent about 50 hours mixing sidequests and main quests before I hit the level 20 cap and finished the main quest.

However, as good as the game is, the ending is every bit as lame as people say it is.

The game was fun, but I felt that they lazily mashed things together for the history side in Fallout 3. So a nuclear war happened between China and the US in 2077, yet everything around from the pre-war era looks like it's out of the 1950's. The computers in the game are all like 1980's IBM's with green text on black screens. They borrowed from pop culture with things like mad max inspired raiders, using some hilariously random item for future currency like soda bottle caps, Chinese troops still in the wasteland 200 years after the war, and even the Mirelurk King looks like the creature from the Black Lagoon. Can't forget an alien spaceship crash for some unknown reason, that must have been an awesome apocalyptic war.

I would have just liked to have been rewarded with more of the backstory for having gone out and explored tons of buildings.
