Just got home from a work trip and have SC from Gamefly. Starting it soon, but I know I'll enjoy it, but also miss a bit of the classic.
These series evolve, look at Rainbow Six.
I'm one of the crazy people who remember the first one on PC back in 1998 where you had to plan out the entire mission and execute that plan, your teammates would do stuff based on radio communication (blow a door on bravo signal, etc).

first a little nit pick - opening doors a crack PLUS using the snake cam - I just pointed that out to show the level of options. As in they've taken out many things that the older games had. I agree it's not something that makes tons of sense and I'm starting to second guess if that was in at all - so I'll change it to moving bodies into shadows - something that should have been in this game and was in the old ones - imo of course.
Now, I fully get the reasons why many of the elements were out because of the story. I was basically saying that the game left me wanting for a different game (old-school SC). Not that they should have crammed in all that crap anyway and contradict itself. If it takes a different story to get what i want, then I'd rather a different story.
however, even the story was probably influenced by the current trend of making every thing more accessible. The poster above pointed this out too. I think my somewhat disappointment is a direct result of me loving the first game - the new one isn't "splinter cell-ish" enough for me personally. It's still a fine game and I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone not to like it, just expressing my thoughts upon comparison with the old games.
-I understand, and agree that the moving bodies to a shadow would be a better example.

-I figured you understood, but figured I'd raise that discussion (that they were taken out because they didn't fit this specific splinter cell). If there's another one - and I definitely believe there has to be - I assume that it'll go back to the older Splinter Cell roots...
SpoilerMainly because, if Grimm is able to convince Sam to come back and help her take down Marghaito (sp?), I fully expect Sam to be brought back into a support system with Grimm and the President...almost 24-esque, with Chloe and Jack kinda relationship. I believe that, then, the story would be more focused on Sam finding, and taking out, that organization, which would lend itself to a more slower paced, complex, "old" Splinter Cell type feeling, because he wouldn't be motivated by revenge and wouldn't be running off adrenaline, he'd be going back to his secret agent background and would need those kind of tools.

It's definitely different than the original and the other games, but I don't know if there's really any way to prove whether or not the trends influenced the story design which then influenced the gameplay, or if the gameplay dictated the story, if that makes sense. I guess the only way to find out would be to see how the next, if there is one, Splinter Cell game was built. If this game was the 'different' one of the group because of the plot...or if this is the direction they're actually heading in with the game.Comment

mgoblue you're absolutely right. Doesn't mean I'll be quiet about it though haha.
Looking into the future I wonder if games like the original will be made at all. Gaming has become bigger, but why does that mean there isn't room for very difficult complex games? I know they are selling to the most amount of people possible and they may even say "costs are huge for developing now, so we need to sell to the most possible potential customers" ...but why for example would conviction cost that much more than the original? Aren't there any studios that could start with a smaller budget and target (the very large number of) hardcore gamers? I also think they're wrong though...I don't think it will alienate too many people if there is a learning curve. idk, it will be interesting 5 years from now to kind of evaluate what's changed.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

i don't see them returning to the old way though. Too many positive reviews and people saying 'i can't go back' in those reviews. Also mark and execute was a pillar for them at ubisoft and that's here to stay. I suppose if they wanted to please the oldschool fans they could add a lot more reconnoissance and sneaky/gadgety stuff and maybe change the way they did light and shadow visually.

very interesting analysis of the story and what you think will it could do to the gameplay. I've always thought that people that make games go backwards as in "let's make a cool spy game" then "sure, let's write a story built around the game" ...but I guess sequels the story really would come first perhaps.

Did they know that this is what kind of story they wanted to do and then built a game around it that happened to be friendlier towards the casual gamer, or did they think of a type of game that the casual consumer would like and then build a legitimate sequel around that?
I am on the fence somewhere in between both of those lines. I think they knew the story and knew that they wanted to try and get casual gamers into it and then built a game that filled both of those.

Nothing more rewarding to me than going one-on-five with my Five-seveN (four marks)...marking four of them, climbing up a pipe and dropping down on the fifth and then going straight into a relatively seamless execution of the other four guys. It's a great feeling and awesome to watch.
I would love for them to build off this engine, personally, and re-add the specific stealth aspects - like the need to pick locks, hack a computer here or there, the ability to pick up objects and use those as distractions, hiding bodies, etc.
I think the current gameplay is simple enough that now they can put those back in and the fans they picked up with this one will be able to transition seamlessly without much of a learning curve.Comment

Mark & Execution was the shiznit. That was the best feature of the game. Mainly because most of the weapons were useless due to they were either too loud or too inaccurate. The only gadget I even cared for was the remote mine. Sticky camera was only useful in one part of the game IMO. Flashbang was ok, but I would rather have used the grenades or emp. Surprised he didn't have smoke bombs.
Shot gun was useless to me......especially near the end of the game, like the last 3 levels. My favorite gun was the 57 pistol.Comment

Finished the game on Normal in one afternoon. Great game. Very fun but pretty short.
Going through the Co-op stuff from here on out and will play through again on harder level.Joshua:

But with Conviction I like the fact they went out and tried something new. It makes it interesting and brings a fresh take on their version of a SC game. I don't get the closed mindedness that comes with people not wanting developers to try new things.Comment

Don't get me wrong...having a good time with it and see myself playing it for some time, but they really did throw most of the SC stuff out the window for this game. It is nothing like the past games. You could easily just run through this game and not take any tactical approach that was required in past games and still beat this game. That would never work in past SC's.
I really don't care who is a "Hardcore SC fan." That doesn't mean a thing here. We are only discussing how this game is far different from past SC's...and that's undeniable.
Like I said earlier...I have friends that love this game and play it with me now, when they wouldn't even tough Double Agent, Chaos, or Pandorra because of how it basically made them think, and not play it like it's Gears of War. That says a lot to me. Still really like it though...Hunter mode is wicked fun. And I haven't even tried the other modes yet.Comment
