Re: The Chronicles of Ridd ick: Assault on Dark Athena (360/PS3)
Atari picked it up, coming in the spring
The publisher confirmed it will release "The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena" this spring. It's a follow-up to Vivendi's 2005 movie tie-in "Chronicles of Riddick: Escape at Butcher Bay," which sold decently worldwide and was critically acclaimed as one of the best-ever film-based games.
In addition to buying publishing rights to the game from Activision Blizzard, Atari also has signed a new licensing deal with Universal that will let it continue "Riddick" as a videogame franchise."Dark Athena" combines an upgraded remake of "Butcher Bay" for the new generation of videogame consoles with a new single player campaign and online multiplayer modes. It is being developed by Starbreeze Studios, maker of the first "Riddick" game. Film star Vin Diesel is doing voiceover work and producing through his Tigon Studios videogame shingle.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: The Chronicles of Ridd ick: Assault on Dark Athena (360/PS3)
IGN: Eyes-on
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is coming, and the team behind it isn't just phoning this one in -- these folks are setting the bar really, really high.
"This is our own little version of the Orange Box," said Ian Stevens, head of game production for Tigon Studios. "We've sort of gotten the whole band back together."
If you're just joining us, Assault on Dark Athena is a special edition of sorts. On one hand, you're getting a recreated version of the critically acclaimed PC/Xbox title The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (every model's been redone, the AI's better, there's a new weapon select system, environments are three times the size they once were, etc.) as well as a brand new story that both star Vin Diesel. It's basically two games, but the second part isn't a sequel -- just the continuation of the original game. Picking up exactly where Butcher Bay left off, the new tale in Dark Athena opens with Riddick going into cryo-sleep only to be rudely awakened when the vessel is jacked by Revas, captain of the Dark Athena. Riddick escapes into the air ducts of the new ship, runs into a kid who lets him know about Revas' slave trade, and then starts his assault on all the bad guys who were dumb enough to get in his way.
Now, these enemies you'll be gutting in Dark Athena are drones that were once humans but are now ugly cyborgs Revas constructed without the original person's permission. Most of the time, these clad-in-black meanies with a gun for an arm are just brainless obstacles with red lights on their heads that patrol a certain area and are easy enough to outthink and waste. However, when that light turns white, it means the drone is being intelligently controlled by a human from a command station on the ship -- expect it to react and act like it's not a brain-dead cyborg.
It's admittedly awesome to destroy these things as Riddick -- one kill I saw had our hero stab the enemy in the gut, yank out the blade, and deliver a killing blow to the head in a matter of split seconds -- but there are more strategic plans you can devise. If you want, you can sneak through the whole game, but if you'd prefer, you're free to run-and-gun throughout the entire tale. Both strategies make use of the game's new counters, combos, and stealth kills.
Back to the drones, Riddick can grab one of the creatures, hold it close to his body, and have a makeshift shield while using the enemy's arm-gun, but he can also take command of the aforementioned cyborg command stations and use the beasts as his enemies would. Once you enter one of these pods -- which looks similar to climbing onto a motorcycle and putting your head down -- you're transported to a first-person, red-tinted view of the action from the drone's perspective. You can just wander the corridors of Dark Athena taking on bad guys until the drone is a beaten pile of bone and metal. For example, Riddick came to a spinning fan blade he needed to get by. Instead of being dumb, trying to jump through it and getting sliced in half, he took control of a drone and walked the undead beast into the device to break it and allow a normal human to pass unabated.
If you're looking for more visual cues and changes in Dark Athena, there are a few. To begin with, the screen will go blue when Riddick's hidden from the sight of enemies via shadows and whatnot. While the screen's blue, the bad guys can't see or hear our hero. Also, although the game's primarily a first-person affair, the perspective will jump to third-person more than a few times -- when Riddick needs to shimmy across a ledge, climb on a crate, or jumps into the drone control station.
The folks behind the game say that the brand new chapter is about as long as Escape from Butcher Bay, so they're estimating about 20 hours of gameplay (not including multiplayer, which hasn't really been discussed yet). While the Orange Box reference Stevens dropped at the beginning of this article is definitely something to live up to, there's no doubt that The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena has some serious potential heading into its spring release.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: The Chronicles of Ridd ick: Assault on Dark Athena (360/PS3)
TeamXbox Preview
Developer Starbreeze made their name on Escape from Butcher Bay. They are now officially a big time development house, having made The Darkness in the interim. The same technology has been the thread throughout, evolving greatly over the years and with the upgrade in platforms. But more importantly the original writers, artists, designers – the basic core development team – is the same. Who else would you trust to remake the original game anyway? From a gameplay standpoint, Assault on Dark Athena is pretty similar to Escape from Butcher Bay, but also similar in terms of its presentation. Escape from Butcher Bay was interesting in that it was far more compelling in story or look than the movies it was spawned from. Obviously Vin Diesel is back, but so is Cole Hauser and other stars like Michelle Forbes—who plays Revas, the evil captain of the Dark Athena—and the incomparable Lance Henriksen. There are plenty of story points that look really intriguing, much like there was in the first game. The big addition this time around, though, is multiplayer. Starbreeze won’t say anything about it at the moment, but it’s looking like the concept of controlling the Ghost Drones remotely might be a factor in that. We’re looking forward to finding out more about the multiplayer modes and we’ll be sure to pass that info on to you when we do.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is quickly shooting to the top of our list of most-anticipated titles of 2009. Playing Escape from Butcher Bay again, remade for the Xbox 360 is exciting in its own right, and the promise of new adventures, new multiplayer modes, new finishing moves and the lot is just a huge pile of icing on the cake. Look forward to the game dropping sometime in the first half of next year.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: The Chronicles of Ridd ick: Assault on Dark Athena (360/PS3)
GiantBomb
From the sound of it, developer Starbreeze and Vin Diesel's game company Tigon Studios initially wanted to remake Butcher Bay because too few people played the original, and because the game didn't work well with the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility. But thanks to Vivendi's intervening publishing shenanigans, Starbreeze was fortuitously granted a good 18 months longer than expected to crank on Dark Athena, and because of that, the project has swelled into a far more value-packed and exciting proposition than originally envisioned.
To me, the biggest deal about this whole thing is the new single-player content, the Assault on Dark Athena component itself. The PC version of Butcher Bay that followed the Xbox original got some new content, too--a brief, throwaway action level that lasted maybe 15 minutes. So I didn't expect a lot from the content being added in the Dark Athena remake. But I was dead wrong on that one. This isn't just a brief campaign tacked onto the end of Butcher Bay. It's an entirely new single-player experience that's purportedly just as long as the original game, and looks just as great as that one did. Butcher Bay wasn't the longest game ever--10 to 12 hours, say--but combined with Dark Athena, this will be a serious haul.Don't think Butcher Bay is playing second fiddle to Dark Athena with a quick, dirty port job. The original game has purportedly been "virtually recreated" by Starbreeze's artists. The levels and character models have been given a new detail pass, or completely remodeled in some cases. The engine (an improved version of the one from The Darkness) is now using uncompressed motion data, giving much finer movements. So you'll see characters' individual fingers moving instead of the entire hand moving at once like a mitten, for example.
New AI routines are going into Dark Athena, and those will be rolled back into Butcher Bay as well, so the prison guards there will be able to knock over tables for cover and blind fire around corners. And the entire experience is receiving some other difficulty tweaks to make it play more smoothly. Dark Athena's team is made up partially of the core team from Butcher Bay; this all sounds a little like a labor of love, for these guys to get to go back and create the definitive version of an already excellent game.
Nobody's talking about the game's multiplayer mode, which I'm sure will be a nice addition, but also seems unnecessary next to all this single-player craziness. But hey, the more the merrier.
Having played Escape From Butcher Bay start to finish, I'm pretty damn excited about Dark Athena. Maybe you can tell. Unless I'm forgetting how good Batman: The Video Game was on the NES, I'm going to call Butcher Bay the best movie-based game ever made. Heck, it's one of the best games of the last generation, period. If you're one of the many people who didn't play it in its original incarnation, Starbreeze is doing you a huge favor in crafting this vastly improved version. Don't make the same mistake the second time around.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
