Yeah, I'm a huge fan of CD. I rented it and ran through it, but I've been missing it. Putting on some Matrix/Ghost in the Shell music and superjumping over buildings in the future was alright with me. I'm gonna pick up a copy this week.

Crackdown is STILL probably my favorite Xbox 360 game, lol. I'd be the first in line to buy a sequel.

The Major Nelson podcast really started a storm with this, and I'm 100% it was intentional. We'll see it at E3, MS keeps saying they are breaking the bank this year and I, like TJ, will be first in line to get the sequel. Loved Crackdown 1.

Source: Microsoft is funding Crackdown 2 development and Ruffian start-up

VG247 has is on good authority that Microsoft is funding Scottish start-up Ruffian Games specifically to develop Crackdown 2.

We’ve been told this morning that a significantly-sized group of people resigned from Realtime Worlds approximately two weeks ago to form the new company.

Realtime Worlds has steadfastly refused this morning to give any information on the individuals that left.

A spokesperson told us on the phone that doing so would be “against the data protection act,” and declined to comment in any way.

Realtime Worlds confirms “ongoing” Crackdown 2 discussions with Microsoft

In a statement issued exclusively to VG247, Realtime Worlds studio head Colin MacDonald has confirmed the developer is in “ongoing” discussions with Microsoft regarding Crackdown 2.

His comments came after it was rumoured today that Microsoft was funding Ruffian Games - a new, Dundee-based firm partially formed of ex-members of Realtime Worlds - specifically to develop a Crackdown sequel.

MacDonald added that while an offer to develop a second game hadn’t been made to Realtime Worlds, he “very much” doubts “that Microsoft would harm an otherwise fruitful existing development relationship by gambling on funding Crackdown 2 with a startup on RTW’s doorstep, for obvious reasons.”

Realtime Worlds boss and GTA creator Dave Jones told us that he’d be “gutted” not be involved with Crackdown 2’s development, “but if it had to be that way, I would want to see it done justice – by an established, renowned developer that had the track record of delivering the quality gaming experience Crackdown players would demand.”

MacDonald also confirmed that “five or six” staff had left to join Ruffian, as was rumoured this morning, but that the “vast majority of the Crackdown team remain at RTW” working on APB and an “unannounced project that will cause quite a stir when unveiled.”

The existence of Ruffian came to light this morning after this Flickr set emerged of members of the fledgling firm look at office space in Dundee.

Crackdown lead designer Billy Thomson is involved with Ruffian, as is Xen Group long-timer, Gaz Liddon. Xen provided physics, art and other resources for the original game.

                The full statement’s published below.

I just wanted to correct the rumours today surrounding Crackdown. Although to date we haven’t had an offer from Microsoft for the Crackdown sequel rumoured, we continue to have ongoing discussions with them. In the unfortunate event that there isn’t an agreement with RTW reached, Dave said he would “be gutted not to be involved, but if it had to be that way, I would want to see it done justice – by an established, renowned developer that had the track record of delivering the quality gaming experience Crackdown players would demand.”

In any event, I also very much doubt that Microsoft would harm an otherwise fruitful existing development relationship by gambling on funding Crackdown 2 with a startup on RTW’s doorstep, for obvious reasons.

Regarding the rumoured RTW departures, we believe that maybe five or six ex-Realtime Worlds staff have been employed by Ruffian in recent weeks. Whilst we’re always sad to lose any member of the RTW family, fans should rest assured that the vast majority of the Crackdown team remain at RTW, and our 200+ talented individuals are working hard towards APB being one of the biggest launches of 2009, as well as on an unannounced project that will cause quite a stir when unveiled.

It's cool that people resigned from RTW and started a group up. I'm also glad that there will be a Crackdown 2. I'm just skeptical as to who will be making it and if it'll succeed in the footsteps of the previous. In all honesty, I'm watching this one with no solid opinion against or for the development if it's not RTW. I hope that whatever happens, I'm blown away because Crackdown was a sleeper.

I don't see how crackdown 2 would fail in comparison to the first. Crackdown was a fun game, but highly repetitive and somewhat shallow. There's great potential to add to that and give it a little more meat though. I hope MS doesn't drop the ball on this.

I don't have time to go through games, but believe me, it's not hard to imagine a sequel failing. It happens more frequently than expected.

                          Crackdown Vets Form Ruffian Games
New studio has already made deal with "major publisher" for next project.

Last month's leak of a new studio appears to be turning out true, as Kotaku reports that Ruffian Games has been formally announced. Gaz Liddon is serving as studio head and Billy Thomson is the creative director of the studio, which is composed of several development veterans who worked on titles like Fable 2 and Crackdown.

"Our highest priority is gameplay," said Thomson in the press release. "Above all, we want to provide an online experience rivaling any other through co-operative and competitive multiplayer gaming. Online play is the future of gaming and we're incredibly excited about where that is going to take us." Regarding the staff, Liddon added, "it simply isn't possible for any studio to have a better start than this."

When the leak first hit, rumors flew that the studio was set to work on Crackdown 2. This news doesn't confirm that bit, but it does give word of "a development contract with a major publisher" for their first project. Half of the rumor has been proven true, so we'll have to wait and see if the rest as well.

Rumour: Crackdown 1.5 out “early 2010″, Ruffian IS working on it despite Realtime Worlds statement

It’s not going away, and it sounds as though you’re about to hear an awful lot more about it. Newly formed Scottish developer Ruffian is most certainly working on a new Crackdown game, says “rumour” today, and apparently it’s scheduled for the end of 2009 or early 2010.

The project’s being called “Crackdown 1.5″ in the UK trade, and it’s set in the same city as the original Realtime Worlds 360 classic. Multiplayer’s going to play a massive part in the game, aparently, moreso than the new single-player stuff.

Just a hunch: you might hear more about this… tomorrow. Life on the edge, and all that.

Realtime Worlds put out a statement at the end of December saying the firm was in ongoing negotiations with Microsoft about continuing the franchise as a reaction to rumour that Ruffian had picked up a second game.

Ruffian - the Dundee-based developer comprised largely of ex-Crackdown staffers - was confirmed as open in late January.

If they could bring out some solid multiplayer in DLC for Crackdown and then give RTW the Crackdown 2 go ahead, I'd be pleased. I'm so not into the multi-player like so many others. If it's mostly multi, I think I might have to pass. I'mjust curious to see how much they put towards the single player and if they made great enough strides.
