What was your most memorable game-release date? - Operation Sports Forums

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know OS now has an official Discord that you can join right now. We’ve kicked around Discords for individual games in the past, but it felt like the right time to make it more of an official thing.

Steve and I have wanted to get this going for a bit because we obviously still hear from y’all who are unhappy with some stuff on the forums, plus when there are forum outages we still want to have a place for everyone to hang. My overarching goal for the longer term is to have both Discord and the forums ultimately work together. There are some logistical issues with the vBulletin forums that don’t allow things to sync right with Discord so there will be a little maneuvering as we try to get mods and forum members any proper roles/tags they need on the Discord, but we can work through that stuff easily enough as people join.

Our general goal is to give people more options to interact with OS community members, whether that’s Discord, the forums, this newsletter, or improved apps. If people want to stick more to the forums, that’s cool. If people want to stick more to the Discord, that’s also cool. In my perfect world, we do a lot of BSing and day-to-day chatting on the Discord about games and sports, and then more of the “in-depth” discussions or hefty things like long slider breakdowns or analysis of gameplay end up on the forums so that can act as a sort of “best of” area for anything OS community related. That said, you all will ultimately shape how the ecosystem shakes out, I just want to give you spaces you like so you can have a good time with other folks in the community.

The same general rules will apply on the Discord as they do on the forums, and we’ve brought most of the forum categories to the Discord as well so there should not be too much confusion as you navigate around.

With the Operation Sports and Discord announcement now out there, it’s also worth mentioning our OS premium newsletter, which quietly launched a couple of weeks ago. Built off the Not Just Another Roster Update newsletter, it offers a mix of retrospectives, guides, interviews and deeper dives into the sports gaming world—covering both current and classic titles.

What was your most memorable game-release date?

I am really looking forward to October 2nd.

I haven't looked this much forward to a game-release date in a long, looong time.

That's b/c besides NBA 2k8 coming out, there are also 2 other games due out that I am absolutely drooling over:

Pro Spirits Baseball
Hot Shots Golf 5

I am literally having pre release-date mania over here. I can't remember the last time I was so looking forward to this many games on the same day. I am going to end up dropping $150 + tax next week.

What were your most memorable release-dates? Or the day so many games came out that you HAD to have?!

Off the top of my head, NBA Live 98, for no other reason than it was delayed and delayed and was supposed to be a huge upgrade. Reality, it was a crap compared to 97. Good to know EA hasn't started a new trend, they've been doing it for a decade.

I think it was NCAA 06 for Xbox... it was my first midnight wait in line for the game experience.

I'd probably have to agree. I had it preordered, but still had to wait in a long line to get it. I remember the geek behind the counter saying, "here you can wear this while you play your Dreamcast." It was this ugly orange shirt with the words "Sega Dreamcast" in black print on the front. I was just like "gee thanks buddy."

NFL 2K and Soul Calibur were two of the best launch games I can remember.

Yep. I hadn't been that into videogames for a while and hadn't owned a console since my NES. In '99 I was working in a Mall at a CD store and a guy I worked with also worked for EB in the Mall. He kept showing me magazines of what the DC and games were like. I got really interested in it and pre-ordered one. I vividly remember picking it up 9-9-99 and bringing it home. The first game I played was Ready 2 Rumble and I was in love with the DC instantly. NFL2k absolutely blew my mind. It got me into football. I even bought the strategy guide for it, so I could learn about the formations and plays.

There was something about that console - right console at the right time for me. I loved my Xbox and now my 360, but those DC days were my favorite. I followed every single release for the DC (which was sadly a little too easy since there weren't that many for a while and the no EA support sucked) and even though I didn't buy every game, I really followed the releases. Ah, the good ol' days...

Early May 2000, Perfect Dark. I had just finished my first year of law school and had about a week off until my summer job started. No better way to spend that time than on the follow-up to my favorite FPS of all-time (Goldeneye). I went to Best Buy at 10AM on the day it was coming out and they didn't have any. Went to Toys R Us and no luck. Finally, an EB in the mall said they would have it in the next hour. So I walked around the mall for about 45 minutes and headed back to the store. They were in and I headed home for a marathon of "killin' and dyin'" with my roommates.

Street Fighter 2 on the SNES.

That, and Super Mario Bros. 2. You couldn't find that game ANYWHERE in NYC.

With the internet, it's much easier to quell the hype. Back in the day is when it was fun... meeting up with random strangers who were also out looking for a game that you wanted.

The advertising. The hype. The anticipation. As a huge Halo fan, it does not get any better than the people saying: "We're going to call out your numbers now..." and then hearing them blast the Halo theme song over the speakers.

I have read all four Halo books.

I have logged countless hours into all three games.
