      Ill Bite:

Half-life: HL ushered in a new era of user created games such as Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Gary's mod

Golden eye: So you can play FPSers on a console, interesting.

Halo: So you can play FPSers on a console that are just as good as on a PC, interesting.

GTA III: I dont think i even need to explain this one

Duke Nukem Forver/ Diaktana: These two games will stand as examples on how to not make a video game.

This is an opinion and only console gamers think Halo is any good. The gameplay is average and does nothing special. Halo shouldn't be on a top 5 most influential list ahead of Half-Life, Doom, or Castle Wolfenstein because, well, it's just not even close (as far as being influential goes).

Starcraft should also be on a top five list as e-sports would be years behind where it is if not for SC's popularity.

The others have been said enough I suppose.

I wouldn't put it ahead of Doom, nor in my top 5, but I also don't have a problem with others listing it. You would have to be some hardcore PC elitist to deny the massive influence it's had - control scheme, vehicle controls, regenerating shields, two weapon system, emergent combat bowls, behavior tree AI, and it heightened the commercial and critical appeal of FPSs on consoles.

Halo 2 revolutionized online multiplayer for consoles not to mention the sheer commercial appeal it brought with it and the attention it brought back to console FPS, which is why there are more than a few of us who have posted about its importance and included it on our list.

And as for the bolded part, that is your opinion and one that (as Flawless above stated) is generally only heard from the PC gamer crowd.

Re: The Top 5 Most Important Video Games of all Time

It's kind of hard to define most important, and even harder to narrow it down to just 5. I'm going to assume that the intent is to get the 5 most important games in terms of influence on their genre/gaming

                  Here is mine though

                  pacman
                  super mario brothers
                  Doom
final fantasy 3 (in the US, 6 overall)
                  Ultima Online

1 and 2 are self explanatory.

Doom is the game that really started the first person shooter genre. There are other games in this genre that have been just as important to get to where we are today, but Doom started it all.

Final Fantasy 3/6 was the game that seemed to create hoards of rpg fans in the US. There were other great titles like secret of mana, earthbound, etc...but FF 3/6 really brought a lot of attention to the genre

Finally I have Ultima Online. It wasn't the first MMO, but it was the first one to have great commercial success and it was a spark for the genre. Remember, both Everquest and Asherons Call came after Ultima Online

On the topic of Halo. I thought it was a great game, and it executed the online aspect very well, but it wasn't even the first on the system to do so. Unreal Championship was the first xbox live title (or at least first xbl fps) and was a couple of years before Halo 2. It had a lot of success, and you could argue a lot of what Halo 2 did well came from Unreal Championship's online play.

How is Metal Gear Solid not part of this discussion? One of the most dynamic games as far at character development, gameplay, and overally presentation. I think it layed the ground work for all games that are played now with a cinematic feel.

Of course it's mostly heard from the PC gamer crowd...they're the ones who are use to so much more when it comes to gameplay.

I just don't see how any halo game is top 5 important to gaming as a whole. It's popularity progressed some things for consoles, but not gaming as a whole. Doom, Castle Wolfenstein, and half-life are 3 fps that did a lot more for gaming as a whole than any halo did. Halo can easily be argued for a top 5 spot if the discussion is console only, but not overall.
