Played for about an hour so far (have to get up and go to work tomorrow, so I quit early). The opening scenes are a bit slow in terms of gun-blazing action; rather the team really wanted to put you in Duke's world and set the stage. I do like how, in these stages at least, you can pretty much interact with, well, everything. Probably could be better served with one level of this sorta thing, but the action and plot was slowly starting to pick up when I had to cut it off.

I will say this, and this isn't something that affects my opinion of the game but i might affect that of others: the graphics in this game can be pretty hit and miss. In particular, the facial animation of NPC characters during dialogue doesn't compare to any other modern 3D game, in that they are kinda awful, haha. The long load times are still present in the final game as well. Neither of these things really bother me, though I can easily see how they might bother someone else.

this was always going to be a dated mess that never had a chance to live up to 14 years of hype and genre evolution, but 2k all but wanted them to just push it out the door. It'll be a nice curiosity, but I'll wait for a price drop.

It'll be interesting to see what Gearbox does with their own Duke games in the future though.

Game Informer Review - 6.75

If you’ve been following Duke’s development all these years, the campaign is worth a look. I found it to be an interesting game to analyze and dissect, questioning what may have been created 12 years ago by 3D Realms and what was created today by Gearbox Software and Triptych Studios. Nothing about it is truly remarkable or to the scale of other genre heavyweights, but it is a fun run when it fires on all cylinders.

Probably the first review I've seen that acknowledges that while the game isn't anything special, after all those years it fulfilled its purpose. They say the campaign is worth one run-through.

I realize that, but I think that is going a little too far even for a Duke game. Seemed like some of the comments expressed that same sentiment as well. I just don't see what it adds to the game, not like it's a horror game.
