How much would a decent set-up cost me? I have a kenwood system.

So for all the sound experts out there, should I trade my Bose freestyle and get a klipsch sound system for a little cheaper price?

I'd go to Circuit City and check out that Onkyo receiver with the Polk speakers home theatre syste. For what you paid for that Bose, you should be able to build a pretty good system.

My setup was bought in Dec. 1999. I bought the Onkyo DS-575 (I think) and the Polk RM series six-speaker kit (RM 5400, I believe). With tax everything was $1200, but prices have dropped quite a bit since then. It's a very good system for movies/gaming, and pretty good for music if you use the 5-channel stereo.

I don't recommend Bose because they are overpriced. You pay way too much for what you get IMO.

I don't have an optical plug. Only the xbox plug (red, yellow, white). Do I really need to get an optical plug? I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out, but I only tried once, and it didn't work the way I plugged it in, so the sound was just plain.

if your receiver has a digital optical "IN" jack, it would sound better. Do you have your TV connected to the surround sound receiver? how?

Yes, the rca jacks from the television runs to the reciever, the yellow to the video 1 jack, and the red, and white to the video 1 audio in jacks.

I assume you have a place to hook up a dvd player on your receiver?? If so, just hook the xbox up to that using the red, white and yellow jacks. When you want to play a game or watch a dvd on the xbox, just select the "dvd" on your receiver.
