Interesting article but I'd still be making my used game purchases.

      Re: Used Games Are Bad??

This is a flawed article. To assume that all of the profits that gamestop makes off used games is money lost to developers is wrong. Many people actually only buy used games, even getting games they would never buy for full price. Retail stores don't deprive publishers of income either, as they already get their share. It costs money to be in the retail business, and these developers could try it themselves if they wish. You are seeing things like Steam come out to distribute games, which costs money itself.

This article is just a rant, which also mocks consumers who feel like buying cheaper used games and not buying the latest need for speed for $60. Games have short lives because of the developers rehashing franchises and the lifespan of consoles, not because someone buys a game for $10 cheaper than buying it new. It also assumes that we all go buy new games, trade them a week later, giving gamestop this huge cache of awesome games they make a huge profit on. Games get traded in for a reason, and for every copy of halo 3 they get, they probably get 30 copies of a madden or lair or something that sucks.

I wonder how long it will be before games are download only and the days of buying used are over.

The day that happens is the day video games will lose its placehold in my household and many others. If this turns out to be the primary way to game, definitely not sticking around for it.

If it's that bad for publishers, why don't they put down their guns and initiate a joint venture to establish a foothold in the retail business, be it online and/or storefront. A retail chain funded by "United Game Publishers" can sell the games for less. I would love to see the day when Gamestop/EBGames having to face competition from another video game-centric retail business.

Really?! I can't wait for that day. I wont have to go to a mall or store packed with idiots, or put up with teenage employees who want me to buy a strategy guide, magazine subscription, and or the stupid savings card everytime I buy a game. There wont be a disc for me to lose or break. I would think there would be more games for a cheaper price, since there isn't any discs or packaging or shipping. I guess the only thing I will miss will be the instruction books.

actually, it wouldn't make it cheaper at all. For one thing, to complain about profits made by retailers, then to pair with one or open your own, only to choose to not collect the same benefits would be pretty pointless. If anything, they'd make things the same price, and get the same slim profits that the retailers get off selling new games. They'd also get profits from selling used games.

cutting out the middle man doesn't really make things cheaper, as they'd still have to pay the cost of distribution, and they'd want to get profits from doing so. Consumers have also got numb to paying current prices for games, even N64 games were $70 occasionally, so we won't see games drop to $30 or $40 anytime soon.

I think this idea is still pointless until they decide to load games with the type of DRM that sony talked about. We would buy the right to use the game, not the actual game. Trading it in could only be done through an authorized seller, which allows the game to be sold again. This would guarantee their stuff wouldn't be rented out by anyone but them, or sold on ebay, ebgames, etc.

If there was some kind of buyer protection it would make things easier. If I buy a TV and I am unhappy about it I can return it. Yet if I buy a new game and I am unhappy with it I'm screwed. Doesn't make sense. Until then I buy used whenver I can.

I wouldn't even miss those. Madden's instruction book was two pages: a cover and the credits.

Agreed. I read on these boards that EB and Gamestop in the US let people return used games within 7 days if they don't like them. That's not the case around here. The EB where I live actually seals their used games and if you open it you can't return it for a full refund, just like a new game. I generally stay away from EB Games and go the Ebay route for used games as I can get games cheaper and when I sell I usually get more than EB would give me.

That sucks...I thought I could just get a credit back for my used game purchases that I return, but you can literally "buy" a used game, play it for a week, return it and get your cash back.

I don't do it often, but I have done it (as recently as last week actually).
