    Bionic Commando Rearmed

2D remake for XBLA and PSN. I'm more excited for this than the actual sequel. It looks awesome.

    Preview

Bionic Commando Rearmed looks set to take its cues from the NES version of the title, Simon Viklund noting that, "The arcade version may have been the first, but there's no doubt that the NES version is the one that deserves to be revisited." The home version of Bionic Commando refined gameplay, introducing a more flexible Bionic Arm that allowed for more acrobatic play. As Judd recalls, "The NES version is the one that is the most different from the rest, and it is also regarded by many to be the best. The NES version also had a more unified and understandable set of enemies and a memorable story line."

Wow...I mean, WOW. I first read up on this just last night at IGN and got kinda excited! Now I am REALLY excited after seeing the vid. Is there a date for release?

This game and Commandos 3 will take me back to my childhood for real.

                      Bionic Commando Rearmed: Multiplayer Hands-on

The new combat mode can be thought of as four-player combat from a 2D perspective. The camera stays fixed, zoomed out to show the stage from afar as players blast away at opponents, pick up power-ups, and use their bionic arm to swing between platforms and avoid falling into pits. You can select to make this a battle royal, or you can form teams, even having three team up against one.
In addition to Death Match and Last Man Standing play styles, the game includes a "Don't Touch the Floor" option. Here, the weapons don't actually do any damage. Instead, they push opponents away, the goal being to push them over ledges and into bottomless pits or pits filled with spikes or quick sand. This usually means death (usually, as you can sometimes grapple out at the last minute for a lucky save).
The lack of online play may disappoint some (just how many is a big question, though, as Judd shared with us internal Capcom figures that indicate only a 6% online connect rate for something like Puzzle Fighter a few months after its launch). However, we had a tremendous amount of fun playing locally, even with editors from other publications (our sworn enemies!). This is the type of game you'll want to load up when friends are over.
There's a whole lot more to the game than just the competitive multiplayer mode, of course, most of which has been previously revealed. The game's main story mode looks like it will offer a good amount of play time. It's actually a close replica of the NES original, although with a few new moves, an optional mini game for hacking into computers, the option for cooperative two player play, and some slick artwork from Capcom artist Shinkiro.
All modes benefit from some modern gameplay concepts like a life bar and auto-saved progress. No more starting back at the title screen when you die!
Capcom has also turned the game's training mode into a game all itself. Set up like a time attack mode, your goal is to clear challenges in the shortest amount of time possible. At stake is the possibility of world fame via the game's internet rankings, which are shared across the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The game includes 50 of these challenges. The bionic arm is, again, the real star of this mode, with challenges requiring that you do some things that you might think impossible at first. We actually found it to be pretty enjoyable to make this into a local time challenge, trading off the controller to see who could get the best time.
And all this is yours for a mere ten bucks. Given the budget pricing for the game, you might think you're getting a budget title. That's definitely not the case. In addition to all the single player and multiplayer content, the game has one of the most advanced engines you're likely to see in a 2D perspective title, with some effects that have been borrowed from its big 3D brother that's currently in development for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Anyone who loves the side scrolling genre enough to actually know what "2.5D" is will be in awe at the game's visual style from the moment that they start to play.
When we sampled it this weekend, Bionic Commando Rearmed was just a week away from going gold, meaning it should make its May release. We'll have a full review of the title once we spend some quality time with the final version, but it's seeming like a no-brainer given the amount of content and the absurdly low price.

                          Bionic Commando Rearmed in July

Capcom's remake of NES game Bionic Commando, subtitled Rearmed, will hopefully be released on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC in July.

That's the tentative timing according to producer Ben Judd, who said as much to us at Capcom's Captivate 08 event in Las Vegas last week.

Capcom's press pack also confirmed the pricing: 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) on Xbox Live Arcade, USD 9.99 on PSN and USD 14.99 on PC.

Bionic Commando Rearmed re-imagines the 1988 NES game in silky new graphics, retaining most of its level design but introducing more than 50 challenge rooms.

Players still navigate the world in 2D, using the bionic arm grapple hook device to swing around levels and take out enemies with projectile weapons.

It also has a two-player co-op mode and multiplayer, with deathmatch, last man standing and "Don't Touch The Floor" modes.

On show in Vegas, Rearmed looked in great shape, drawing plenty of attention from the dozens of journalists flown in from around the world to check out the company's line-up for 2008 and beyond.

Absolute steal for it's price. Can't wait.
