    Here, I'll explain:

In KOTOR, when I'd enter a room I'd select who I wanted to attack and my party to attack. I'd also select special attacks and grenades if they were needed. If I wanted everyone to focus on one person, it was pretty easy. If I didn't do things correctly, I'd die pretty easily in a lot of areas. Using force powers in combination with your teammates was key.

In Mass Effect, I'd just run into the room and kill everyone. No strategy, just shoot them all. And it wasn't even like a good FPS, like a pretty bad one mostly.

    KOTOR = Strategy
    Mass Effect = FPS

I prefer strategy to FPS, so I'd much rather see the KOTOR system than Mass Effect's system.

Stop calling it a FPS. It wasn't even in first person. If anything, it was a third person shooter.

Yeah, people seem to have this thing about labeling Mass Effect and Gears of War as FPS games.

You can do the exact same thing in Mass Effect.

You either haven't played Mass Effect, especially if you're saying that the KOTOR system had more strategy by comparison, or you played on the easiest difficulty because it's not just "go in a room and shoot".

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I died 100x more on KOTOR than I even did on mass effect on the same difficulty levels. Yes, you can do strategy in Mass Effect, but why when it's not needed? Just run in and blast, use the healing and shooting mods if needed. The difficulty was dumbed down in Mass Effect to the level that strategy wasn't really needed very much--it's not that it didn't exist, it's just that you really didn't need it. Then there was that tank vehicle you drive--why? That was really dumb in my opinion--drive around in a vehicle that controls really poorly and fight enemies that NEVER MISS if you're standing still, no matter how far away you are. My gamertag is taylor34 on xbox live, you can see that I beat the game. I've played (and beat) bgate 1, bgate 2, planescape torment, icewind dale, nwn, kotor 1 and 2, jade empire, and mass effect from bioware. As far as actual gameplay goes, I'd rank mass effect 2nd from last, just above Jade empire (which was equal lame), though the story was definitely better than some of the games above (kotor 2, nwn, and icewind dale come to mind).

Just think of it this way--in KOTOR you had to look through your inventory for anything that would give you an edge in certain battles. Strength injections, speed boosts, grenades, etc. Every battle it seemed you needed to analyze what they had and how to not die. I never felt that way at all in Mass Effect. If I died, it was just because I aimed badly 99% of the time, not because of bad strategy.

These are just my opinions, nothing more. I'm a pretty hardcore RPG guy, and from my standpoint bioware is dumbing down their games to a degree for a mass audience on the current consoles. Bgate 2 was by far their best game, and that came out a LONG time ago now--it is in my opinion the best RPG ever made, even today. Just look at the changes--gone from 6 players to 3 players, now to one player and basically sidekicks. That doesn't seem like advancement to me.

I don't understand how you can say that they're dumbing down the games or that having real time fighting is "lame". Standing still and attacking one at a time is pretty lame.

Re: Bioware is working on a new KotOR

They are two separate types of RPG. Mass Effect is a RPG, but a third person action based RPG. They factor in your aim to go along with weapon power, and other powers.

KOTOR was a more numbers based RPG, where your hit/miss was decided by invisible dice rolls.

I personally don't think either are "lame" they are just different types of RPG. Bioware has evolved from the FF type of turn based to KOTOR's turn based to the Mass Effect action type. My guess why they did that was to appeal to a bigger audience. You'd be amazed at how many people go running when they hear "RPG", at least in the casual gamer ranks. Hell, even here there are a ton of guys who wouldn't touch a game they think is RPG.

I like both, and I see both sides of the argument...

PS I think this rumor was HULK-smashed, so the title of the thread is rather misleading.
