Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
It has some issues here and there. The controls can be iffy, the animations are hit and miss (movement for Thorton being mostly "miss"), AI is suspect and flat out stupid at times, etc.
The mini-games are great concepts but can be hard/frustrating depending on the controls. From researching my earlier issue, it seems many people where put-off by them (more on consoles than PC, it appears).
With all that though, the story is good, the graphics are good (facial features range from bizarre to excellent) the game play is fun, and the RPG elements, while not overwhelming, are mostly well-done.
I think the issue for AP is that it is lacking some polish and came out after ME2 when it's more on par quality-wise with ME1...which means it feels somewhat dated.
I also think people look at some of the main functions of the game (stealth, gunplay, etc) and compare it to FPS and action games when the function of the actions are RPG based...meaning that skill-levels/attributes have much more determination in results than direct user input. It doesn't compare favorably in that regard.
So far, I think it's a good game. It's definitely worth playing if you can get a good price. This is based on the PC version though...I would probably be more hesitant for the console one as you lose the ability to tweak the game.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
I think it depends on what you value more, story or gameplay? The story/presentation is very enjoyable and they did a good job of making your choices reflect in it. Though as I said before it seems like they ran out of time and money in some places and you may not get all the choices you'd like to make. You may also screw up and not get to make one (or more) you wanted to. Also personally not having the option to make a character hurt it a bit. Still if you're a story first person you should enjoy it.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
It plays a lot like the old N64 game Mission Impossible mixed with a mix of other games (Metal Gear, Syphon Filter etc) but overall is lacking polish for sure.
The animations are years behind current benchmark games, the shooting is inaccurate and unresponsive, the AI is average at best but there's something satisying about the game.
I have been playing with a stealth based character and it seems quite fun so far. Only maybe 1/3 through my first play through, I'm not sure if my decisions actually affect or change the story and characters etc but it's nice to have the choice of how you answer and treat characters.
For a low scoring game, it seems to have a bit of a cult following and I might be one of those followers
I got it for half rrp price so am happy so far.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
So Im playing through this game right now, I really do not understand all the hate for it. Sure its no GOTY but damnit, it fun.
The worst part of it though is the voice acting and its not even the actors fault. Why they have the main character try and be funny all the time is beyond me, if they would have made his character more like Sam Fischer that would have been awesome. My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
So I just beat this game a few minutes ago. Don't see why it got so much hate. Grant it some of the gun and damage physics were kind of odd. Like russian bodyguards in 80's track suits being able to survive repeated shotgun blasts.
Other then that I enjoyed the game, so much I going to play it a few more times. Being that characters and missions you get are so decision based, I had missed out on doing some missions and meeting some people that my friends meet when they played the game.
I wish I learned how to hack early in the game, took me 5 or 6 missions before I mastered hacking the PC's. I find mastering in engineering makes hacking a hell of a lot easier.
My 1st play through I was strictly a shotgun and pistol guy. Next play through going to get the subs and assault guns a whirl. And I must get better at making money, because half way through the game I was hurting for money.
Can't see how people afford all that 100k plus armor and weapons. I need to thoroughly search my target places and do a better job of not getting seen.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
I rented it and I'm playing it and I like it.
big problem though:
I chose to go to shanghai and now I'm in the safehouse and can't do anything. Like there is nothing I can do. I can't use my pda, I can't open a door, I have no idea how I can get past this. I think the game glitched so that I can't make it progress anymore.
I really don't want to start over or go all the way back to the last mission I did.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Yeah go into the shower......To me that is the best safe house out of all of them because it looks like an actual safe house, secretive and well hidden.
One thing I like about the game is that every game is different depending on what you say and what missions you do 1st. Because I did Rome, Moscow and Taepie last.
And Thornton says some funny shiz when you go to Taepei last.Comment

thanks guys!
yeah I don't know how I missed that. Was running all over looking for button prompts.
cool!
I rented because of the opinions I've read here and I'm glad I did, it's a fun game to play for sure.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
I thought this game was great fun. Sure it had its faults, but a sequel with the jankiness removed and better voice acting would've been great. I thought Protocol did a better job with the game changing based off of your decisions than ME2.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
I really hope they do a sequel and make the game twice as long. This game really is a gem. Most people giving out all the bad reviews just came at the game wrong. Even though it says in big letters on the case ESPINONAGE RPG, too many people treat the game as though it is a FPS, instead of what the game is, a RPG.
I had more fun playing this game then playing that last Final Fantasy game that came out. But then again I always loved open world games that give you choice. Which I loved Dragon Age, Assassin Creed 1 & 2, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption.
I love playing a game where as what you do in the beginning effects you down the line. Makes it more life like when there is a cause and effect.Comment

I agree but i'm pretty sure they already cancelled plans for a sequel due to reviews/sales.
