Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
Pre-E3 2009: Alpha Protocol Preview
Set for an October release on PC, PS3 and X360, Alpha Protocol promises to offer up some very different gaming experiences from one player to the next. If what developer Obsidian Entertainment is saying holds true throughout Alpha Protocol, the decisions you make will greatly alter what occurs. It's all about choice, but it's not about good and evil. Just accept that you can't be a very successful spy if you're truly trying to be a good guy. Instead of affecting a moral barometer, your choices in the game involve who to trust and who to betray.Beyond this, the choices you make in conversations (often you can just start attacking an NPC) also have an impact. You must learn the personalities of the people you meet, because, believe it or not, there are some who get turned on when you try and kill them. It's impossible to judge from a single mission demo just how intricate a web Obsidian is weaving, but from what I've seen it appears to be a pretty complex matrix of personas. If they pull this off, Alpha Protocol is certainly going to make for an interesting playthrough. There are several types of operative you can become. You can lean on tech, be more of a straight-forward soldier, a stealthy spy or any mix in between.
You have nine different skills to upgrade to level 10. Eventually you choose a specialization, which allows three associated skills to be raised to level 15. Each skill, at different levels, offers up some extra abilities through perks. You can get the Chain Shot, for example, which slows time so you can paint multiple targets for a barrage of rapid-fire shots. The Tech Aptitude skill boosts the power of your gadgets and eventually earns you the Field Stripping perk, which enables you to change your weapon customizations on the fly. How you progress your character is going to affect how you approach missions, simply because of your skill set.
Upgrading your character's stats is only half of your customization. You're a spy, so weapons and gadgets are part of the trade. Don't discount your inventory – it can make or break your mission. Depending on your character's class, you have a set amount of weapons and gadgets you can carry. Before each mission, it's up to you to decide how to prepare yourself. You can add custom items to your weapons (sights, silencers, pistol grips, etc.), upgrade your armor (which affects your endurance and noise you make while moving), and choose your gadgets (remote mines, EMP charges, radio mimic, etc.).The gameplay is, to be honest, a little underwhelming on first viewing. This is a fairly standard looking third-person cover shooter. The main hook is that you have gadgets and perks that assist along the way. The Fury perk, for example, temporarily turns you into a raging badass, able to crush enemies in hand-to-hand combat. Use your gun or really do anything but beat people to a pulp and you instantly exit Fury mode. So keep your rage on by punching every enemy in sight, or load up your shotgun with phosphorous rounds and set enemies ablaze.
To break up the combat, there are opportunities to hack into computers and secured doors. The minigame shows a circuit board with several different nodes that need to be lit up. To light the nodes you need to scan the complex circuitry and pinpoint the correct electrical path to each node. Light all the nodes in time and you've hacked successfully. Fail and an alarm goes off and more goons come a-running.
Alpha Protocol's gunplay and cover system are pretty standard, but look enjoyable. The upgrade elements, branching paths and network of allies/enemies are what stand out. I'm hopeful that given the chance to sit down and play Alpha Protocol for a few hours, my personal investment in upgrades will make the combat a touch more thrilling. I'm looking forward to finding out.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Yeah, the AI didn't look too good in parts of that video. I hope there are more stealth, spy elements like the Splinter Cell series. The clip just made it look like another first person shooter.Comment

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
I don't know if you were listen to the developer talk, but he said that in the demonstration he was playing a "commando" type of character so shooting everyone up was what you were going to see.
Its unlikely that you'll see much stealth gameplay during any demos, because that isn't as "exciting" as running and gunning, but he did speak on how it was possible to play a totally stealth character, leveling up and equipping your guy in way that is conducive to that kind of play.
We'll obviously find out later if the A.I. is really suspect, but I bet he was playing on easy to make sure that he didn't die during the demo.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
You must not play traditional RPG's.
Many of Obsidian's members are former members of Black Isle.
Black Isle made Fallout 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, and The greatest game of all time(IMO of course) Planescape Torment
Obsidian has made Neverwinter Nights 2 with its 3 expansion packs and Knights of the Old Republic 2-which would have been one of the greatest games ever had they not been forced by LA to release it several months too soon.
The are also working on a Fallout: New Vegas, a new game set in the Fallout 3 universe.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Re: Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's new action-RPG)
Poor man's Mass Effect but it will definitely keep me satisfied like KotOR II did, which was a very good game which would have been great had it not been rushed.
The Mass Effect mechanics just seemed a lot tighter IMHO.
I'm never gonna complain about more RPG games- this gen has been pure bliss in terms of RPGs and will get even better with ME2, Alpha Protocol, and Final Fantasy.

One thing I've never gotten is the "poor man's..." term when it comes to video games. It's going to cost the exact same thing Mass Effect did - since console titles are pretty much a standard price.Poor man's Mass Effect but it will definitely keep me satisfied like KotOR II did, which was a very good game which would have been great had it not been rushed.

I've got to say, though, it looks better than Mass Effect to me. I don't get the hype Mass Effect gets - I found it rather boring and clunky.
The cut scenes were amazing - but once I got dropped off on a planet and the gameplay part took place, I found the gameplay absolutely mediocre; and without gameplay, a game is nothing.Comment

One of the most breathtaking moments in videogames period was staring out of the window in the Citadel and seeing all the ships moving in and out of the Citadel. I just stood Shepard there for 5 minutes while I watched the Citadel's arms moving around and ships maneuvering around.
Regardless, like I said, I'm not complaining. I have a low threshold for enjoying RPGs and I have really liked Obsidian's previous stuff (not to the extent of Bioware though).

Yeah - the game looks awesome, and has some great scenery, but the gameplay was absolutely mediocre, and a GAME should have good GAMEPLAY on top of a story.Comment
