Another one!? Seems like the RPGs are coming out of the wood works. I just got into enjoying Eternal Sonata, and I didn't even hear about it. I love this genre.

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
haven't played SO since the first one so this will be pretty nice. I started to make this thread last night but I knew Flawless or ThaGenecyst would make it within a day or two. So great to have you two on OS...
360 is a JRPG monster...who saw that one coming? Cry-on is still coming which looks to have really good art, Last remnant is a timed exclusive, and there are rumors that the next-gen Front Mission will be on the 360. On the western front, Fable and Sacred 2 both look pretty good as well.Hank's Custom Collectibles 3D printer/painter extraordinaireComment

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
All these people saying, "I haven't played since the first SO," and you know what, be glad. SO has gotten so bogged down in its filler and trying to be so "epic" that it is just not a very good series anymore.
It's like a third-tier RPG nowadays to me.
Be happy with your memories of SO and let them continue to be happy memories.I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). I write it, and it hits your inbox every Friday morning (for freeeeeee). We also have an official OS Discord you can now join.Comment

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
E3 2008: Star Ocean IV Details
Though Square-Enix isn't ready to show a live demo of Star Ocean: The Last Hope, the famed RPG publisher is ready to at least provide a few details. The latest in the beloved Star Ocean series -- and first on a Microsoft console -- is actually a prequel. The story takes place before the first Star Ocean and is an origin story for the entire series. Earth has been decimated by World War III and has become uninhabitable. Humanity's last hope is to find a new home among the stars.
For those who played the previous Star Ocean titles (remakes of I & II are coming later this year to PSP), there will be allusions to the past stories. Though this is an origin tale, it does take place in the same game universe, so there will be connections to future events.
Developer tri-Ace promises a more "authentic" sci-fi experience, even though the trailer shows plenty of (welcome) flights of fancy. The "realism" is a product of the story taking place closely to modern times. And for those who played Star Ocean III, tri-Ace recognizes the distaste some had for the big twist. While we can't say there won't be an equally big twist in The Last Hope, we were assured that the closer ties to reality will prevent any sort of virtual reality cop-out as in the past. Star Ocean IV's story will be "easier to understand" than its predecessor, according to tri-Ace.
In Star Ocean IV you'll visit multiple planets, rather than being stuck on a single world. No details on how greatly those planets will vary or the purpose for visiting each. We'd assume that one of the overarching quests is finding a hospitable planet for human relocation.
As for gameplay, Star Ocean IV will be very similar to Star Ocean III. For those who didn't play the previous Star Ocean, that means real-time combat that takes place in arenas separate from the travel field of the game world. The combat will be "flashier and speedier" with new too-be-announced features. But at its core, it will be Star Ocean III. That's a very good thing. And yes, you can expect some form of item creation as well.
Further details on Star Ocean IV will have to wait. Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 spring 2009, Square-Enix is keeping a tight wrap on the game for the time being. But if it's going to play like Star Ocean III and lack the what-the-eff plot twist, then it's going to be an RPG worth the wait.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
I didn't really care for that battle theme music. Sounded kinda cheesy.
Graphics look nice though and the battle system will probably be a blast like other Star Ocean games.
Wow this is set for a 2009 Second Quarter release, bummer.
At least this fall is packed with RPGs. Fallout 3 and Fable 3 and the Star Wars Force game should keep all of us RPG nuts satisfied.Last edited by Uhfan; 09-11-2008, 02:19 PM.Comment

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Star Ocean 4 Update
New characters and battle system details.
Details are slowly starting to emerge on the third title in Square Enix's trio of Xbox 360 RPGs. Star Ocean 4 was given a huge blowout in this week's Famitsu just ahead of its playable debut at next week's Tokyo Game Show.
The magazine got first word on a couple of new characters. Joining the previously announced Edge Maverick and Reimi Saionji are Faize Sheifa Beleth and Lynle Remli Phi.
Faize is an 18-year-old member of a survey group on the planet Eldar. He's extremely smart and makes use of powerful spells that require great study in order to learn.
Lynle is a fifteen-year-old girl who lost her parents in her youth and now resides in the village of Triom on the planet Remrick. She also has powerful spell-casting abilities and is friends with a Cerberus that she summoned.
Also offered in the magazine are some first battle system details. Part 4 keeps the series' trademark real time battle system in place but features a number of improvements. Notably, your party can now reach up to four members as in the earlier Star Ocean games.
The battle system seems, more than ever, like something you might find in an action game. When using normal attacks, you can string together combos of up to three hits depending on the type of weapon. Each weapon also performs differently depending on proximity to enemies, with the screen notifying you if you'll get a "Long" or "Short" attack.
You have access to a jump move. The implementation appears to be a bit counter-intuitive at first. To Jump, you first press and hold down the jump button. Your character assumes a jump position and locks himself into place. You can then push the left analogue stick in the direction that you'd like your character to perform the jump.
New to the game is a system called "sight in/sight out." As part of this system, you can use jumps and side steps to get into and out of the enemy's field of vision. The transition between in and out states is accompanied by some special visual effects, including slow motion.
We'll be getting hands-on time with this new system and all areas of the Star Ocean 4 gameplay systems at TGS, so stay tuned for even more details come next week!Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
