Famitsu 360 scores - 9/9/8/8
Some translated reviewers comments
- The combat system is very solid and excellent. "Sign-out" move can be very difficult to time and execute, but that difficulty makes it fun and challenging.
- The combat system is so good that it almost feels like an action game. However, the game still retains its core as an RPG, including the excellent Private Action System and Item Creation System.
- Because SO4 is a prequel, people do not need to have any knowledge of the previous SO games to enjoy the story.
- The action-oriented nature of combat may sound difficult, but it's very manageable if you play in normal mode.
- While in combat, you can switch to any character in real-time, making strategizing very easy. Members in reserve can also be switched into battle at all times.
- Quests and dungeons still remain the same style as the previous games, which can cause a few frustrations.
- Even though SO4 doesn't feel like a totally new game compared to the previous SOs, but fans can rest assured, as the game feels very polished and complete.
- The game interface is intuitive and tutorials help a lot. The feeling of piloting a spaceship to explore the huge universe is exciting.
- The best thing about the game is the combat system that rivals great action games. It's extremely well-done and impressive. The game also gets much better as player becomes more creative in creating infinite variety of combos. "Sign-out" system can be used to dodge enemies' sudden attacks.

Only a 34 in Famitsu? I guess Square did not buy enough ad space for that issue.I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). I write it, and it hits your inbox every Friday morning (for freeeeeee). We also have an official OS Discord you can now join.Comment

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Star Ocean: The Last Hope Details
One of the hallmarks of the Star Ocean franchise is the Private Action event system. These small, optional dialogue sections have allowed the player to flesh out the story -- particularly the characters' backgrounds and personalities -- and ultimately have affected which ending the player would get at the end of the game. Private Actions are back in Star Ocean: The Last Hope and recent information sent out by Square Enix indicates that the system will be more accessible and deeper than ever before.
The Last Hope will have over 100 Private Actions and they won't be as ridiculously impossible to find as they have been in past games. In fact, most will be accessible simply by talking to party members inside of Calnus, your starship. Once again, some Private Actions are only triggered by meeting specific hidden conditions and some only take place at limited times. Some Private Actions will trigger chains of Private Actions that can lead to special scenes, unique items, or even battles.
The big news, though, is that Private Actions will once again determine which of the game's endings you will see. No word was given on how many endings The Last Hope will have, but it will be related to hidden affinity levels. In many Private Actions, you'll be given a choice of dialogue or actions. What you do will change how the rest of the party views both the main character and each other. These affinity levels will affect which game ending you see.
Affinity levels will also affect battles. If two characters are especially close and one falls in battle, it will cause the other's Rush Gauge to go to the max. This will allow players to enter a berserk mode with speed and attack levels skyrocketing.
The Last Hope will also feature a new Crew Quarter assignment feature. On board the Calnus, you have the option of choosing which squad mates will share quarters. Up to two party members can share a room and opposite genders can sleep together if their affinity levels are high enough. Some of these room pairings will even trigger Private Actions and affect affinity levels, so Square Enix encourages players to test the waters with a variety of room assignments.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope is due out on February 24 for Xbox 360.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
No problem man. Fact of the matter is, if the game is good enough, you find the time to sink into it, and it looks like this will be one of those times, especially now since my computer is busted and getting a new one is low on the priority list.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Anyways, I'm starting to feel the itch to drop money on a JRPG to waste time in. Unfortunately I still need to finish Lost Odyssey (I could just go do the last dungeon but I want to try and get all the achievments except treasure hoarder), Tales of Vesperia (can't believe you passed this one up), and I picked up a copy of Eternal Sonata over the break I haven't even started yet.
Sometimes I'm a really lazy gamer.Comment
