Guitar Hero: how bad am I?

I have Guitar Hero II for the 360. Had it since X-Mas. I've played it a good deal, but not as much as I'd like due to work and other commitments.

Anyway, I've made it through Career Mode on Easy and Medium difficulties, and just now started playing some Hard songs. I 5-starred all the Easy songs and have 5-starred more than half of the songs on Medium (with the rest being 4 stars). On Hard I'm right around 80-85% of notes hit and get 3-stars on most songs. Expert? Can't even finish half of the song.

So, am I absolutely terrible at this game, bad or just average?

Even if I do suck, I am having fun.

      I'd say average, if that.

A lot of people can't (or won't) even step it up to hard due to the fear of having to hit all 5 colors.

I'd say good, but yea its all about having fun. I'm at the point (after living one year at college where I majored in Guitar Hero) where I can do 80-85% of the total songs on Expert now.

From my experiences playing online, you're probably average, or slightly above average. "Good" players are guys that are good on hard and okay on Expert. "Very Good" players are guys who are good on most expert songs. Excellent players are a lock to beat just about any song with a very high score(and can probably 5 star a hard song they've never played before) and "God like" players wake up and snack on Jordan and TTFTTF in the morning.

            Nice. I'll take average.

It took me 4 songs to get back on track with the timing system on II today after playing GH: Aerosmith. Totally different feel between the 2 games. I'm sure 3 is the same way.

If you like Aerosmith I would suggest getting 3 because they are basically the same game except 3 has better songs unless you are just obsessed with Aerosmith.

Oh, and on how bad you are. You aren't bad, just a normal person transitioning from medium to hard. Give it time, sure it depends on the songs, but on the songs you started out with mid 80's will become mid 90s with practice. I just switched in the past week and was in your position last Thursday.

The orange note is the biggest adjustment to make, because you have to deal with that as well as more chords when you get to hard. Just keep practicing.

Moving up to Hard/Expert is a big adjusment to make. When I first started playing, I was pretty good naturally--- I've always been good at these types of games. I did consistently well on medium, but I would only strum down when I played. When I decided to move up to hard (regardless of the fact that it was really difficult to get used to the addition of orange notes), I realized I'd have to learn to strum up AND down to keep up with the harder/faster songs. It was really discouraging because I was so solid up to that point, and when I started strumming up and down, i flat out sucked for a while. Now, ever since I made that switch on GH1, I've been consistently 5-starring almost all expert songs in all the subsequent games (with the exception of Jordan and Fire/Flames).

I've been trying to strum up and down on a more regular basis, because it's an essential skill. I wish I would have just done it that way from the moment I originally picked up the game. I actually up strum most of the time, using my index finger.

The only reason I do that is because the downstrum stopped working on the original les paul I had, so I just started upstrumming everything and never went back. i think I can upstrum faster than I can downstrum.

Best way to learn that, in case you aren't already going it, is to do it on the easiest songs for you to play. When you're really good at a song, you can implement new technique comfortably.

I'd say you're about above average. There are a lot of people who can't even play on Hard. You get better with playing though... no doubt. When I bought GH3, I had never played before in my life. According to Bornindamecca, I'm now probably a very good player. I can do well on pretty much every Expert song, but there are a few that I can beat but am not good at. The good thing is you're having fun. If you keep having fun, it will encourage you to keep getting better. Good luck!

Yeah, I'd say its about average. I can do hard pretty easily on Rock Band and expert ok, but Guitar Hero is a completely different story. If I want to have fun, I generally stick to medium, but I can do ok with Hard, and I never try subjecting myself to expert that much

I can't have fun playing Guitar Hero unless I'm on expert. I can beat most any song on expert except for the highest-tier songs on most of the games.

I just started playing DDR. On that game I can beat most of the songs on 'difficult' (the GH equivalent is 'hard') and can only beat a few songs on expert. That game is a little bit more difficult to get good at in my opinion.
