    Re: Borderlands

Any input on the single person portion? I'm seeing most people talk about multiplayer, but I've no interest in that part of the game.

I'm also on the fence between 360 and PC. I prefer the PC controls, but this sounds like a good console game, too - and I like being able to sit on my couch and play it on a big screen.

even in single player i've been enjoying it. it's difficult enough to pose a challenge, but not so hard that you want to kill yourself

What is the game world like? Is it just completely open, or is there a 'central hub' that you return to frequently in order to explore other areas?

what is it like? Well it has more in Common with Heroin than a Video game. This has been a great year for games, and this is a sleeper GOY candidate.

I've been playing single player solely so far, and am absolutely loving it. Honestly, you gotta give it a few levels before it really gets going, as you don't even get your action skills until level 5 (Roland's turret, Mordecai's Bloodwing, etc.). But once you get a few quests going that take you different places and have you going through more difficult portions, that's when you start to really looting for some bad*** guns. For instance, about level 7, I found an automatic shotgun with a scope, and it's still punishing baddies at level 12.

I have no doubt that this will be my Fallout of 2009, and not in the fact that they are both wasteland FPS types. It's because I can see myself playing this for the next year at least, given the replayability with 4 different characters and all of the different skills. If you're on the fence, go get it man. It's a blast.

Yeah the guns are great. I found this one gun with a scope that kills just about everyone with two shots, and it's not a sniper rifle. It completely destroys the enemy shields in one shot and then kills them with the next.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

                    Re: Borderlands

I played another few hours last night with my buddy. I decided to start over from a sniper to the solider, and since he was rated so high, my leveling went really quickly.

This is the first game that I didn't really mind starting over. The fact that the game doesn't really have a story doesn't really bother me too much, in fact it almost helps it since I like doing quests with people and killing ****. It allows you to play a first person shooter multiplayer style, but not really worry about the competitive nature, which COD will fill anyways.

You can play it first person and the first hour will be a bit of a grind, but I highly recommend just starting an open xbox live game and have people join you. Since you are host too, you can kick anyone you want at anytime anyways, so if you find a hoarder or an annoying kid, then you can just get rid of them.

After you get past the first few quests though, the activities that you do are excellent, so it will keep you interested.

To those just getting the game and starting at low levels, just host the game and invite your higher level friends if they don't mind doing some of the quests they have over again. The world will be scaled to you and the higher level will be able to run through the world pretty easily killing stuff and getting you XP quickly.

For instance the first night we all played at the same level and it took 5 hours for me to get to level 13, this time I was able to get to level 13 in about 2.5 since I was playing with a level 19.

What it does though is gives most XP to the lower levels and less to the higher levels so eventually you can catch up to your friends.

It works inversely too, so if you join a higher level game you will get a TON of XP, however you won't be able to actually do much damage.

I think it is excellent that they made it that way so even if you are behind your friends you can catch up to them pretty quickly.

That's what happened to me last night. I had just started playing and Chubby hopped in. Next thing I knew it was "DUEL!" with a guy twice my level. He tried to let me kill him but I wasted like 200 rounds just to whittle his shields down. He shot me 3 times and it was over.

After we came to grips with WTF was going on, it was an absolute blast. He was level 9 when we started and I was 5, but by the end of the session we were both 13 and having a hell of a time. Some missions we'd just tear through stuff, and others there would be some RIDICULOUSLY hard groups of Skags or Bandits.

We'd alternate between mowing down scores of baddies to running for our lives and trying to headshot brutes without getting melted by a rocket launcher.

Was a really, really good time. I don't know about setting it to friends only, but he's the only guy who joined all night, so I don't think it's automatically set to "everybody join", Mill.

When you setup your game you can have only your friends jump in so that is a nice feature if you want that.

I've been playing with 4 friends people and having a blast. We've had the lower ranked person create the game and even though we don't get credit for completing a quest that we already did we still get the xp for the kills and once that person gets caught up to us then we all get credit for the missions so that aspect is really well done.

I did lose an awesome sniper rifle because my inventory was full and I accidentally held down X button and it switched out my weapon to the crappy one on the ground and I didn't notice till we had left the area, so be careful when you are picking up items.
