          Borderlands Armor (Dev Post)

I was twittering this, but I'll just go ahead and post here to avoid further confusion.

"Armor" in Borderlands can be broken down into one of two schools of thought.

Statistics and Visuals. It's all represented, just probably not in the traditional sense you're thinking of.

We have a very robust system for upgrading your character in ways that are not weapons. You can upgrade:

          -Shields
          -Class Mod
          -Artifacts

All of these added together provide the same ability to customize your character as a traditional RPG, albeit in a slightly simplified matter. A shield is basically what keeps you alive, but with thousands upon thousands of them around, you're sure to find some that do really interesting things (faster recharge, higher capacity, do damage to enemies, light **** on fire, make you breakfast, etc.)

In addition there are class mods which do all matter of crazy things. Class mods are specific to Hunter, Siren, Besersker, Soldier, and can affect any number of things. Some buff your existing skill tree stats, some increase individual skills as well as well as Co-Op skills (i.e. stand next to Mordecai and your accuracy goes way up!) Some do crazy stuff like multiply the number of bullets you fire each time you fire your gun... the list goes on. I'm just listing off the crap I've seen-- and there's no way I've seen all of it.

Artifacts are another type of collectible gear. These are rare, and they can have really insane effects. The one I have on my Bloodwing right now actually blows people up on contact... it's crazy. And hilarious. And everyone loves a bird that can blow people up. That's the only one I'll spoil... Artifacts are the super happiest drop you'll find in Borderlands.

And as for visuals. We separated the visual customizations of the characters from the gear upgrades to allow people to look how they want without affecting their gear. Like in some games... you end up looking like a total dork just to get the stats you need. Not so in Borderlands. The characters can be customized and re-customized at any New-U station around Pandora.

I think I answered that to the best of my ability. Please refrain from eating the chairs.
          GamePro Q&A

GP: Some of the earlier versions of Borderlands put emphasis on the randomized environments, dynamically created environments. Has that feature been shelved?

RP: Yeah, we've definitely gone more WoW in that regard. The randomness of the world design....you could tell it was random [like in Hellgate London]. The random environments didn't work that well. There's still randomization in enemy population, chest contents, rewards, but the world is a crafted world now. It's a richer world, it's believable.
          New Game+

GP: What's the level cap for Borderlands? How far can you level up?

RP: It's currently 50. And that's a big experience, you probably won't hit 50 on a single playthrough. There's a "new game plus" mode, where you start the game over.

When you restart the game, you find harder enemies and better loot. We wanted the player character to be persistent whether you are online or offline.
GP: Is the co-op vehicle combat still in Borderlands?

RP: Vehicles are certainly in the game. A few hours into Borderlands, you'll be able to spawn vehicles at vehicle stations, pick your paint job, weapons, and so on. Vehicles are great for moving around quickly, and friends can jump in too.

GP: Borderlands has a lot of weapons, but do you still stand by your "500,000 guns" claim from a year or two ago?

RP: Oh yeah. There are now millions of guns. There are so many guns that it doesn't even matter now; you won't even see them all.
          Also, from OXM:
          • There will be 10-12 vehicles that you can pilot.
          • You can also get around using the fast travel system. There's a network of registration stations around the world of Pandora, and they digitally record every single bit of your character's DNA structure and disassemble and reassemble them. It's like a classic teleporter.

Same here. Has a grindhouse feel to it, too.

I am really digging the new graphic route they decided to go. I was playing Fallout 3 last night and man it is just soo gloomy. I know it is supposed to be that way considering it is a post apocalyptic world. But it is just sooo dark most of the time it is not as inviting as boarderlands is looking.

OMG, I really want this game, Is there a release to it? The arena sounds cool, like play the story then go to the arena for death match and etc. Wonder how they will do the item pick ups? Like will whoever kills the guy get the Drops, most dammage or do they automatically devide them?

                    Edit: Nevermind, October.

IGN - GC 2009: Borderlands Impressions

I admit that I was a little unsure about Borderlands going in to the demo. The recent coverage of the game had left me with more than a few questions about its focus and direction. But thirty minutes watching the game play out in free-form coop mode (and a quick turn at the controls myself) has me convinced that the designers' risky blend of genres, weirdly original IP, stylized art design and over the top violence has tremendous potential.

                            Eurogamer

Pitchford was as enthusiastic as ever about the game, which is due out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 23rd October, providing his usual effusive commentary throughout a demonstration of a couple of quests played out by four Gearbox staffers in co-op. "That midget just got incinerated!" "Look at that mutant - he's got this little gimp arm!" We suggested 2K includes him in the game box as a pre-order incentive so he can stand in your house making observations.

Despite talking about DLC, he was also adamant about the value in the box, suggesting that there's 100 hours of content in the FPS/RPG hybrid if you want to experience all the quests. That doesn't take into account the 15 million possible weapon drops either.

"We're in cert right now," he said after the demo, referring to the process where Sony and Microsoft make sure the game doesn't climb out of the disc tray and start melting people's hamsters.

"Man, I tell ya, this is the best thing we've ever done, the best my studio's ever done. We're really proud of it."
