Re: Biggest surprise of the year?
Tie for me between Eternal Sonata (PS3) and Valkyria Chronicles. Never heard of them until a couple of weeks and I'm still playing through both, but I have enjoyed these two games.Comment

Dead Space for me too. I wasn't interested in the game at all when announced, but I absolutely loved it! It might actually be my GOTY.Comment

Re: Biggest surprise of the year?
I agree and that is why it is my biggest surprise. It was so so on my radar, I was watching it but it reminded me of all the other horror slash "NOT scary" games. But once I got it in my hands, I was blown away. SOOOOO immersive and done so well on a sound level. Good boss fights, good build ups, just all around really great titleComment

Left 4 Dead. I hadn't been paying the game any attention and everytime I saw the thread on here I thought Alone in the Dark for some reason.Comment

The high production values, attention to detail and overall polish is what amazed me from the title.Comment

Re: Biggest surprise of the year?
1.) The XBL update: my biggest surprise. Heard a lot leading up to the release but didn't think much of it; thought I'd dislike it in fact. But love it so far; and there's a ton of potential for growth. Pre-release: the avatar look is cheesy. Post-release: gimme more customization options dammit - I'll reach in my pocket if I have to
2.) Fallout 3: I couldn't get into Oblivion; just figured this would be a post-nuke age Oblivion. Purchased it half-heartedly not expecting much and found myself totally immersed in it's world. I'm hooked.
3a.) NBA2K9: Didn't expect a major upgrade given the lead up to release. But the attention to detail to everything from bench players to realtime stat-displaying jumbotrons, crowds, gameplay, player emotion, animations, etc. - pretty much everything being ramped up a notch or two has made it a joy to play for me. A month and a half from release and still seeing new things.
3b.) Devil May Cry 4: Didn't expect to like the new game better than DMC3, or like Nero better than Dante. Lacks some of the in your face attitude of DMC3 but was way better than I expected it would be.
3c.) Geometry Wars 2: Favorite arcade game. Again didn't expect the enjoyment factor to be ramped up as much as it was for me. Nice improvementsLast edited by spankdatazz22; 11-20-2008, 04:44 PM.HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period
