I looked it up on GameFAQs because I had the same question. When you create the new game with your existing ME2 save it creates a completely new game save/character. You don't lose your existing guy, but your paragon/renegade is reset giving you the choice on what to do. When you beat it with the 2nd you'll then have 2 characters to import into ME3, each with whatever decisions you made on that playthrough.

Question about the New Game+ or whatever it's called. I know you get some bonuses, but if I start over, will I then have two end game saves with that Shepard? One from the first playthrough (of which I made some bad decisions) and one from the New Game+? I'm looking at going through again as my main guy, make the decisions anew, get to Level 30, and import THAT character into ME3. Any problems?
Before that, though, I'm going to hit ME1 again as a fem-Shep Renegade, then ME2 with her.

looking forward to continuing my 360 ME1 characters. I basically got a copy of ME2 on 360 for $5. Amazon had it for $55, I had $50 gift card still on account there(forgot about it), picked free shipping(no rush, I have the PC version already). looking forward to playing it. It should be here within the next 2 days.
why do I want it for both PC and 360? dunno... I usually get the console and PC versions of most game I really like(KoToR, Morrowind, Oblivion to name a few). usually it's the other way around though. I normally get the console version, then get the PC version, usually for mods. but after playing ME2 on my friend's 360, I actually like ME2 on 360 more(other than the mining, which is terribly slow on 360 compared to PC), plus I have about 5-6 ME1 characters on my 360 compared to my 1 on PC.Comment

SpoilerThe way I figured it the mission at first was also to release the Blue Suns' control over the refinery. Killing innocents just so a merc can get revenge over another merc didn't seem like the correct choice for me. Especially since I don't really like Zaed.
Also on my renegade play through now... love the scars and the eyes. Awesome stuff. Looks very badass when the camera cuts to a dark corner and all you see is two glowing red eyes from Shepherd.Comment

SpoilerMordin seems to die a lot, and randomly(I've seen some people on bioware's site, that he would die, then on a reload with same choices, he would live). it's usually best to not pick him to do anything, or you could bring him with you in your party. Garrus is actually a good choice to lead. as well as Jacob and Miranda. as long as they are loyal that is.Comment

Interesting thought on the end of the game/ME3:
SpoilerI wonder how Bioware will take into account that you could theoretically lose your entire team during the final mission, whereas a lot of us got through it without anyone dying. I don't think they'll do the whole "Shep dying" reset again, so it'll be interesting to see what characters they phase out and which they bring back, along with the story/plot reasoning behind it. You gotta think they'll have more new characters as well. Thane will probably be gone because he said he only had 8 months. The game appears to be taking place in July of 2185 (based on one of the in game ads) so if it's in March of 2186 or later for the next game Thane will be gone. That could make a good start to the game if he lived through this. Thane death/funeral.
SpoilerSheppard only dies if everyone else dies so you'd pretty much have to be trying to get killed for that to happen. I had only one person loyal and still had 3 non-Sheppard people live. 5 if you want to be technical about it as I left Grunt in the box and sold off Leigon.Comment
