        - Your level
        - Your achievements, to a limited extent. For example, the rich achivement is a good one to have. You must have finished the game after you acquired the achievement to get the benefit on your imported character.

We didn't want to make it so you'd have to create some kind of maxed out character in ME1 to achieve the most powerful character in ME2, with that said, an imported ME1 character will have small permanent advantages over a brand new ME2 character.

I don't want to over emphesize these advantages though. If you are obsessed with min maxing and want to be as powerful as is possible at the end of ME2, importing a level 60 character from an account with all ME1 achievements is the safest bet.

For most people, just importing any character who made choices you're interested in having carry over is the way to go.

The bonuses are a nice boost at the start of the game, but they aren't overpowered in the long term. If you're stat focused, you can definitely get better stats in game. If you're not stat focused, and you like the look and bonuses of the armor, you can wear that armor for the entire game.

You don't have to wear the helmet if you don't like the helmet. Like ME1, helmets can be turned off. Personally I like the inferno armor without the helmet a lot, that's probably the look I'll go through for my first playthrough of ME2.

I designed the stats for all pre-order bonuses for ME2. I'm very concious of the fact that giving you the "best" item as a pre-order bonus just doesn't make sense - where is the progression then? Likewise there won't be any DLC "super-guns" for ME2 that trivialize the game. How do we make pre-order bonuses and DLC interesting then? By creating unique combinations of stats and abilities that produce a different gameplay experience. They key there is different, not the same but more powerful (the easy, progression killing, way).

        ...

There is no longer a concept of light, medium, and heavy armor. There are a few reasons why we no longer have this distinction:
        - We wanted class differentiation to be more about offense weapons and powers, and less about defensive items you're allowed to use (by class restriction).
        - We wanted less useless and sub optimal items (i.e. you get great heavy armor, but you're an adept)
        - It's less expensive from an art perspective. This isn't a money thing, it's a time thing. We'd prefer our character artists making awesome enemy models and cool new weapon models instead of making minor variants in armor models.

One caveat to the above, while base class design is less focused on defense, and more focused on offense, there are some incredibly powerful defensive options in the game but they tend to fall under more advanced class development options. Simply put, I know some people really enjoy building "hard-to-kill" Shepards, so there are some great options for that, but they're less part of core class design.

All heavy weapons are usable by all classes. The blackstorm is a heavy weapon.

There will be no ability to upgrade armor. You will be able to acquire better armor but it will have a different look. I've tried to design things in such a way that you will be less likely to feel forced to wear a specific armor to do a specific build. There should be several options for example if you want to max cooldown reduction, you won't be forced to wear a specific armor.

        ...

I can't tell you exactly what, but there is more to the ME2 armor system than has been revealed so far. That's all I can say!

Retailer training quiz drops details on Mass Effect 2 DLC

If a recent Microsoft Expert Zone quiz for retailers has it right, Mass Effect 2 will be supported with downloadable characters, specific combat content, and full episodic content.

This morning a tipster dropped us word and images from the Expert Zone quiz for Mass Effect 2. Created so the retailer can sell the product with more information in tow, it teases what kind of optional content is coming to the follow-up sci-fi RPG.

It lists, specifically in the Xbox LIVE Features section, “planned episodic combat via DLC,” weapon and armor packs, new downloadable characters for the “campaign experience,” new downloadable worlds, as well as “full campaign expansions for download.”

It also mentions that the game will carry “periodic updates,” which features DLC, via Mass Effect 2’s unannounced in-game “Cerberus Network.”

So, in other words, BioWare is probably planning to support Mass Effect 2 in ways we wished the studio would have for the original.

I'll believe it when I see it. While I love Bioware, they always talk about DLC then we end seeing it in very small spurts. I really hope they come through on this, if its true I will be playing ME2 all year!

Other than the first Mass Effect when have they talked about DLC and not delivered?

They talked about it for KOTOR 1 on original Xbox. Granted it was an early attempt and DLC was still pretty new but all we got was Yavin Station. This will be their 3rd game on 360, Dragon Age is looking good for DLC so guess we'll see.

Find in-depth gaming news and hands-on reviews of the latest video games, video consoles and accessories.

Do you want your copy of Mass Effect 2 to have more mass? EA has you covered with the newly announced Mass Effect 2 Collector's Edition, available for $69.99 on Xbox 360 and $59.99 on PC. It includes pretty much what you'd expect from a collector's edition: a tin box, an art book, a DVD with making-of footage, and Issue 1 of the Mass Effect: Redemption comic. It also includes some unique weapons and armor for the game that are limited to this package.

Of course, if you've bought Dragon Age's collector's edition, this will be the second set of exclusive Mass Effect items you'll have earned from fancy game boxes! Mass Effect 2 (and this classy variant) will be out January 26 in North America and January 29 in Europe. Check out the full box art and the armor in our gallery.

Well actually I can't preorder, I'm surprised Gamestop didn't have an ad for it as soon as it was announced.
