Re: Resident Evil 5 demo impressions

Well, keeping in mind that this is a somewhat early demo i'm not too worried. After playing for about 10 minutes I can say that the game looks, feels, and plays very similar to RE4. So yeah, if you're pretty familiar with RE4 the learning curve should be small.

Yeah, the controls could be more optimal considering how well other shooters out there control. I don't like that there is no quick change feature that lets you switch weapons with a simple button push (or maybe there is and I just missed it). Navigating the menu, trying to pick up or assign ammo, and trying to keep the zombies off you all at the same time is a pain. And yeah, the friendly AI is bad. She's practically joined at the hip with you and feels more like she's just in the way than anything else. She doesn't take up any kind of tactical position to do "crowd control" better.

You can hot-key weapons and items to the d-pad. So, you can switch quickly between weapons and other items with the d-pad, which is a nice addition to the game. Being able to quickly switch between the shotgun and the pistol really helps.

I also didn't like you couldn't switch characters. For example when you give her the boost you're still stuck down there. (Despite the fact it'd make a whole lot more sense to just step on the wall and grab the ladder and they'd both be up there)

Then there's the other part where you're on that buliding across the street and she goes to the other one. I was trying to shoot the zombies from a very small opening, with the machine gun at that because I gave her the rifle. After that was done I saw I could've jumped down but I think I would've rather have been over there playing as her.

If the controls are similar/the same as RE4, I'm still getting it.

The clunky controls absolutely kills this otherwise potentially great game. I'm not buying this.

Pretty much this. The controls are slow, not being able to move and shoot is ridiculous. Game looks excellent though. I will pick it up way down the road just cause i love zombie games, and it has co-op.

Yeah, I'm not convinced by this demo as well...Super clunky and unrefined in my opinion, but then again I wasnt a fan of RE4.

BTW, I think there are four different control schemes in the demo and at least one of them should allow you to move while shooting.

Moving while shooting should be the norm. Heck you can do it in RE1.

bah. this game does nothing for me. I played the Fear 2 demo before this one and Fear just poops on it. This one is just slow and just not exciting. Im not a fan of the gameplay i guess. Maybe Left 4 dead ruined this game for me. dunno.

I'm loving the demo so far I can't wait to play it coop with one of my friends. Its probably gonna be a lot of fun with another person because of how much communication is needed to stay alive.

One thing I really liked was how if you don't stay moving they can swarm. During one play through I was trapped in a house and my only escape was route was taken away because they blocked it out.

I tried running away by using the way I came in but that just led me to a dead end. I ended up dying because one of the big dudes with axe came in swingin and killed me.

I also love how intense the game is, you have to constantly decide when to run and when to stay and fight. I love looking back on how I did on a level and count how many times I survived a situation where my back was against the wall and I had very little ammo.

I don't have to much of a problem with the controls because I'm used to playing RE4. The biggest problems newbies probably have is they may not know when its best to run and when to shoot. Once you figure that out the game becomes really fun.

My advice to those struggling with the game is to try and plan ahead set escape routes and only shoot when necessary. Running and shooting would have been helpful but its fine the way it is when you plan ahead. A lot of times frustration kicks in when you lose your head or get caught up in the moment because that's when you have lost complete control of the situation. So basically stay alert and aware of your environment because that's what will keep you alive.

Anyways this is gonna be a first day buy for me March 13 can't come soon enough.
