    End of Eternity (360/PS3)

This is a new RPG from tri-Ace (Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile). And it's not being published by Square-Enix, but rather, SEGA is doing the honors.

    Info from Famitsu:
    • 2009 Winter
    • Main character: Zelpher, partner: Vacheron
    • Machinery gun battle seems to be the theme of the game.
    • Experiment 20 (19 years old), the girl who parts with destiny.
    • Semi-real time battle system.
    • Machinery world setting.
    • 65% done

        IGN

End of Eternity takes place far in the future on an Earth whose environment has gotten so bad that people have moved into a giant mechanized tower called Bazel. This tower reaches far up into the sky. The upper floors house religious facilities, including the religious leader who's known as the "Cardinal," and the rich. The lower floors house the poor as well as mining areas.

Bazel's creation is far in the past as the game kicks off. We're introduced to three characters: the 17-year-old male Zaphyr, the 26-year-old male Vashyron, and the 19-year-old female Subject #20. Zaphyr, the game's main character, and Vashyron live together and work for a private military firm. Subject #20 was manufactured for an experiment which required that she be set to die at 20 years of age. Upon learning how little she has to live, she fled her research facility.

Gameplay in End of Eternity is split between fields spanning the floors of Bazel and the dungeons that are located on those floors. These two areas of the game have different movement systems. In the fields, you view the action from an overhead view and move your party about on a hexagonal grid, encountering enemies at random. During dungeons, you move your character about in third person and can see your enemies in advance, transitioning seamlessly into battle when spotted.

The battle system (this appears to be shared between both fields and dungeons) takes place in semi-realtime and gives you control of one character out of a three character party. When you're moving about on the battle field, time progresses as you engage in flashy gun fights. Once your move ends, time freezes, allowing you to strategically plan your attack.

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding the battle system, and all of End of Eternity for that matter. Details will presumably be more abundant on Friday as the game's official site opens up at eoe.sega.jp. Sega and Tri-Ace will be putting up movies and more at that site, so those who love their JRPG should definitely check it out.

I'm definitely drawn in by the setting and the brief character bios, but I'm going to need to see more about the combat before I'm all in.

Resonance of Fate Battle System Detailed

End of Eternity has a new name for its American release: Resonance of Fate. But the hottest information on the Sega/tri-Ace tie-up is still coming our way from Japan. Famitsu scored first details on the game's battle system, and we're summarizing it for you here.

Resonance makes use of the all new t-A-B battle system. t-A-B stands for tri-Attack-Battle. Yes, tri-Ace put their own name in the battle system. That's how they ride.

t-A-B is a semi-realtime battle system which offers elements of command battles and action battles. You start off your turn by selecting once of your characters. You then take direct control of the character, moving around and attacking a target of your choice. The current character's move ends when your attack ends. After moving all three of your party members, your turn ends.

The term "turn" may be a bit incorrect here, as your enemy actually does not have a turn. Enemies move while your characters move. They're apparently well-behaved, though, as they'll only attack the character you're controlling at the time.

Each character's turn is time-limited. You can keep on moving and switching out weapons until time runs out. However, you're limited to just one attack. Once your attack finishes, the character's turn ends even if you have time remaining.

The actual method of attacking makes use of a charging system. Once you've selected a target and pressed the attack button, your character charges up in preparation of the move. Once a charge meter that's shown surrounding the targeted enemy fills up, you can perform your attack. You can also choose to be a bit patient and charge up your attack multiple times, resulting in stronger attacks.

The amount of time the charge gauge takes to fill up is proportional to the proximity of the enemy. You'll be able to attack more quickly if an enemy is closer, but you'll also open yourself up to attack.

It should be noted that enemies also undergo this charge procedure before unleashing their attacks on you. A meter above the enemy's head shows how close it is to attacking.

While you're free to move around the battle field, you can also set up predefined paths. When moving along these paths, you gain access to Invincible Actions, special attacks which keep you invincible as you strike the enemy. They also produce some flashy effects.

Using these moves require that you make use of an item called an Invincible State gauge. These are an essential element of battle and can be earned through a variety of methods, including dealing a certain amount of damage to enemies.

There's also a defensive component to the game. You have access to a jump, which can be used to avoid enemy attack or obstacles. While in air, you can unleash an attack of your own, resulting in some stylish actions. You may actually prefer to unleash jumping attacks just for show, even if there's no real need to jump.

The Resonance of Fate battle system does seem a bit on the complex side, but we're hoping that once we get our hands on it we'll find some intuitive, enjoyable combat to accompany what sounds like an intriguing story premise. We'll hopefully hear more about the game at E3, or at the very least at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

                              IGN Hands-on

When you think of Japanese role-playing games, you typically think of extravagantly costumed heroes and heroines wielding swords and magic against hordes of dangerous enemies in turn-based battles. But what if you threw all of these traditional concepts out the window, and instead placed a larger focus on action-based gameplay with no magic whatsoever? Then, add in heroes that seem to be pulled straight from a John Woo movie, packing guns and grenades to destroy their enemies. This is the world of Resonance of Fate, an upcoming RPG from Sega and tri-Ace, the developers behind Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean. I got some hands-on time with part of the game, and while the battle system is complex, the action is extremely cool once you get the hang of it.
