    Re: Left 4 Dead 2 (360/PC)

    IGN UK Hands-on

In fact, it's the refinements to level design that are most obvious at this point in time. Valve has expertly fashioned each campaign chapter to simultaneously deliver both the expectedly frenzied zombie-baiting action and a far more nuanced narrative compared to the original. The three demoed chapters that form The Parish take our plucky quartet of survivors from the banks of the Mississippi (the remains of a upended steamboat visible through the mist behind them, if that gives any clue to nature of the preceding campaign). Waves crash around the breakers on the bank and huge wrought iron fencing ahead opens out into the streets of the New Orleans French Quarter, all yellow buildings, balconies and palm trees through the waxy sunlight.

Eventually, the campaign sees your group fighting for life among the burned out wreckage abandoned on the bridge out of the city. First though, you've got to work through the narrow, split-level streets - raiding buildings, dodging zombies and pushing ever onward. It's a huge, detailed map, far more elaborate than anything in the original Left 4 Dead. It's fairly labyrinthine too and, although there's still a fairly linear route to the end of the level, alleyways, alcoves and interiors all offer plenty of scope for exploration and disorientation.
Out on the other side, there's a peak at Valve's reworked crescendo encounters. Finding yourself in a bus depot, it's obvious this is the scene of the city's quarantine area – all towering perimeter fences and medical vehicles, body bags strewn across the concrete. To reach the safe house nearby you need to pass through one of the testing vehicles. Unfortunately, as you open the door to head back outside, a piercing alarm rings through the air, bringing endless zombie hordes down on your position.

As promised, there's no means of camping and sitting out the onslaught this time around. Instead, you're shepherded through the winding fencing as the undead stream into your path and over your head. The only way to bring the encounter to a close is to push forward, dodge beneath the concrete pillars supporting the shadowy overpass above and disable the siren at the far end of the compound. It's fraught, exciting and – more importantly – perfectly orchestrated to play up to Left 4 Dead's innate strengths. If we get more sequences like this in the final game, we'll be more than happy.
All in all, Left 4 Dead is looking incredibly promising. Yes, it's very much more of the same, but – from what we've seen, at least - it's been refined and revised to really ramp up the tension and exploit the formula's greatest strengths. It's still hugely engaging as a co-operative experience and, as an added bonus, Valve has really pushed things from a visual perspective. As is to be expected, the PC version is more of a looker – however, it's a far more engaging package on Xbox 360 compared to the game's previous console iteration. Character models are improved - particularly your undead cohorts, who've evolved greatly from the indistinct grey blobs of the first game – textures are sharper and more varied and, all in all, there's far more detail across the board. There's an increased push from an aesthetic side too, with more imaginative locations that dare to do more than sit tight in drab, mist-enshrouded streets. Throw in a bump in blood and severed limbs and we really can't wait to see more.

      Nice.
A wandering witch... should be interesting. Kind of dissapointed that the melee weapons are nothing to get excited about.

Valve Attempting Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 Cross Play

Don't throw away your Left 4 Dead 1 game discs just yet. It seems Valve is working on a solution to help mend the controversy surrounding the upcoming sequel.

Valve is said to be working on a new feature that will allow Left 4 Dead 1 players to "play alongside other users running Left 4 Dead 2."

"That's something that we're trying to work out the details of right now, said Valve's Doug Lombardi (via TVG). "So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it's a very valid thing to be working on and looking at."

Exact details on just how this will all come together aren't final just yet. With the Left 4 Dead 2 scheduled for release this November, fans should expect more news about this shortly.
New Left 4 Dead 2 Weapon Unveiled

Valve has lifted the lid on a brand new melee weapon for Left 4 Dead 2, just in time for tomorrow's Ashes kick-off. The zombie-crocking newcomer is a cricket bat, which players will be able to weild viciously and knock the undead for six. Will it be effective? Who knows because Valve is keeping further details under wraps, but the prospect of switch-hitting a zombie in the googlies is certainly something we cannot wait to see.

If the idea of skull on willow isn't enough to get your blood pulsing, check out the picture of the cricket bat in action below. And here's hoping the England cricket team are similarly ruthless when they take on the Aussies in Cardiff tomorrow morning.

that cricket bat photo looks fake as hell though. Maybe someone at IGN doctored it up, as it would be quite odd considering the setting in the US.

The bat's real, and I bet Valve made the pic specifically cause England and Australia are hardcore cricket fans...

Not sure why they picked cricket when it's set in the US though, i agree...

Screenshot reveals "Swamp Fever", Playable at Comic Con

Continuing its slow drip of Left 4 Dead 2 details, developer Valve has released a new screenshot from the game's "Swamp Fever" campaign.

In all, the zombie shooter sequel will sport five new campaigns, with only one other, "The Parish," having been revealed thus far. Valve is also being cautious in revealing the "20-plus new items," which will deliver a frying pan, cricket bat and chainsaw, among others.

During E3, Valve's Chet Faliszek briefly mentioned that the game's AI Director now has control over weather, and can summon blinding rainstorms without warning.

While Left 4 Dead 2 won't hit PC and Xbox 360 until November 17, those attending the San Diego Comic Con will be able to play "Swamp Fever" at the EA Gaming Lounge, which will be located at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter Hotel on 401 K. Street.

Cross-play for both of the games would be pretty cool if they pull it off.

                  GameSpy Preview

The premise for the Swamp campaign is that the survivors head into a bayou in order to find refuge within a community which has refused aid from the military and outside sources. When you first arrive it seems hopeful, like perhaps their isolationist attitude could have held out against the outbreak. However, after a short distance you realize that you're in the f**king swamp -- aka no walls -- and that these people were really just sitting around waiting to get surrounded.
Not all of the time spent in the swamps was spent sloshing around in the mud, though, as our team also fought through a shanty town. The shacks in the town take you up out of the water and away from the zombies below, but they also give you a false sense of security. As our team worked through the shacks -- which are connected only by planks that serve as bridges -- we quickly learned that the shacks are made from what must have been balsa wood, as they were either blown apart by our guns or by the force of the zombie hoards rushing towards us. Trying to maintain the high ground in order to stay alive proved a valuable tactic but could also be a liability, as Smokers could easily pull one of us down into the water, forcing our team to consider the choice of jumping in after the unlucky survivor or simply doing what we could from above.

It sounds like such a small thing, but the addition of a level-specific common infected, referred to as "common-uncommons" internally, completely alters the way a level like Swamp or Parish plays. In Swamp the level-specific zombies are mud men: zombies who run on all fours incredibly quickly, making them hard to detect, and especially so when they're in a couple feet of water. This resulted in our team having to be hyper-vigilant when wandering through the bayou, watching the water the way that Han Solo and company did when facing the Dianoga in the Death Star trash compactor. During the not-so-quiet moments, like when we were trying to protect a teammate who'd been covered in Boomer bile, these little zombies could come out of nowhere, providing ample distraction for other infected to close the gaps on our defensive positions. The Parish campaign also featured a level-specific zombie in the form of biohazard suit infected, whose invulnerability to fire created some tough situations when we were relying on molotovs to provide safety.
Beyond the common infected and hero infected from the original L4D, the time I spend with L4D2 also allowed me to check out the effects of the newly revealed Spitter infected. The Spitter -- whose graphic was still being worked on when I played -- can lob a ranged attack into a group of survivors, creating an area where survivors take damage so long as they are within it. No, the Spitter's shot won't do a ton of damage all at once, but it can hurt you badly after a few seconds spent in its area of effect, and can easily make a team panic and split up when it hits in the middle of a fight. Imagine you're in a room with your team and a Spitter lobs the shot through the window, forcing your team to abandon the position. Now imagine that as you all abandon this spot that some of you split off from one another -- perhaps exiting out of the room from two different sides -- leaving yourself open to attack. I'm sure you get the idea of how this can be bad for a team and potentially rewarding in multiplayer.
Smaller additions in L4D2 also made my time in Swamp and Parish feel different. The addition of melee weapons meant that our team would often have to change the way we played, taking careful aim not to hit the person who was in the mix cutting zombies to ribbons. Furthermore, the addition of smaller things like adrenaline and ammo packs -- which replace pills and first aid kits, respectively -- meant that our team had new options to consider when dealing with disastrous situations. For instance there were times that someone might get left behind or separated by an infected, which made for perfect opportunities for one of us to use an adrenaline to blow past them. Using an adrenaline means you can melee all you want, and, most importantly, zombies won't slow you down as you run past them, a fact that often proved critically important in busting through hordes of zombies (or in leaving my team behind when things seemed hopeless).

So the Spitter has an AOE damage ability. I wonder if that is the counter to stacking all the players in a corner and just having them melee.

well originally, or at least according to the community suggestion, the spitter was going to be something that slowed people down when it spit its stuff on you. But now there's a lot more strategy for the infected. You could drag a survivor into the area with a smoker or make them scatter like roaches out of a room.
