Re: Gears of War 3
Love the maps, though still have not played on my favorite one, Trenches. Love Team Deathmatch but Capture the Leader tops it for sure. The game is excellent even though I'm not too good.
What's a good gun for a way-below-average guy at multiplayer? I'm using the Hammerburst but it's pretty hard to use for me.
other than that I love the game. Played a little campaign that was great, MP is stellar so smooth. Gamertag is Tacticxz I'll be on all day Thursday (when I wake up) if someone wants to shoot me a message to play.Minnesota Vikings

Re: Gears of War 3
If you're new and trying to get your feet wet with online multiplayer, play on casual for a little bit. It's just new people, since they locked it out from anyone who played Gears 2 online for a set amount of time. Pretty smart to have an area where the only people playing are people new to the series or didn't play Gears 2 online. Once you get so much play in it (no clue where it cuts it off at), you "graduate" on to normal multiplayer.Comment

Re: Gears of War 3
I got may game yesterday from Amazon. Installed it but didn't have time to play yet.
In Gears 2 you could get a few friends together and play versus with AI bots filling up any empty slots. I expect you can do that in the new game too.Comment

Some other basic tips that can help you in multiplayer:
1. Always spot. You do this by clicking L3. This helps gives your teammates a heads up on an enemy's position, obviously, but you also get points and an assist when that enemy is killed.
2. Also hit an enemy with whatever bullets you can. Even if you don't kill the guy, even if you just hit him twice before he runs to the safety of his teammates, you will eventually get points when he dies.
3. Killing can be tricky for those new to Gears. Work on downing enemies first. The hammerburst is perfect for this if you can feather the trigger, but the lancer also works very well if you just like to lay on the trigger. When you down an enemy you get credit for it on the scoreboard and 50 points. (Also, if you are new I'd stay away from the retro lancer altogether.)
4. Understand corners. Spoiler: people camp in this game. They want for you to come around a corner blindly for an easy kill. Corners/areas where people typically like to hid are around weapon spawns, like the boomshot, digger launcher, torque bow, sniper, or grenades. If you know an enemy is around a corner, don't go John Rambo on him. Try to bait him out of his position. Most people are too impatient to sit there for five minutes. At the very worst, seek out a teammate to assist.
5. Use your smoke grenades. There is no radar or UAV in this game. Only spotting. If you're not spotted then enemies can only see or hear you. If you're in a tricky situation and need to run away, pop a smoke first so the enemy won't see where you go. Smokes are also very good for detecting enemies. For example, if you and a teammate are camped at the sniper spawn, melee your smoke grenade into a wall that leads into the sniper area. That way if somebody tries to sneak up on your back, the smoke will auto-detonate, you'll hear it and be alerted to an enemy's presence.Lux y VeritasComment

In addition to this stick to modes where there are respawns, like Capture the Leader, King of the Hill or Team Deatchmatch. Warzone and Execution are a lot of fun but the amount of skill is higher in those games because that's where the Gears veterans play. Also, playing with respawns will allow you to play more and help you get a better feel for the game.

Also had no idea how to spot, tried all night last night. LOL

Re: Gears of War 3
Guns
For new guys, I recommend the Lancer. It's automatic fire is good for those who like to Rodeo Run with a shotgun. Don't fall in love with the chainsaw. If you're revving up your chainsaw and get hit, you'll stop revving it up and be open to take more fire. The best way to use the chainsaw is a sneak attack from behind.
I love the changes they made the Hammerburst, especially looking down the sights. I think it makes the Hammerburst a little easier to use, but if you're not use to it, then there's a small learning curve because it's not a rapid fire gun like the Hammerburst.
The retro lancer has been the hardest gun for me to get used to. The kick back on it is crazy, but it seems to be more powerful than the other two guns. The bayonet charge has a limited range for those who didn't know. There's a bar under the weapon graphic in the top right corner.
Shotguns:
Gnasher: Great gun, powerful in close quarters. My advice is to always active reload your gnasher. The active reload on this gun is powerful. Also works great as a blindfire weapon. Not to great at long distances.
Sawed-off: This is a tough weapont o get used to. It's a one shot deal because the reload on it takes (seemingly) forever. If you're able to get a good shot off in close quarters though, it's a done deal. I would only recommend this for more expert level players.
Someone else mentioned grenade tagging. It's such an underrated use of the grenades. They're great for covering your ***. You can also "frag-tag" other players (with all the 'nades, even the smoke) and it's fun to sneak up on someone and tag them, run away and watch them explode. I tag the ground a lot when I'm sniping.

Re: Gears of War 3
Saw a guy do it last night in TD. It was pretty sick, he used it as a proximity detector to cover his back side which was uncovered. It was brilliant.Comment

Re: Gears of War 3
Another thing to remember about mounting grenades on walls. You can only mount two grenades at a time. If you try and mount a 3rd the first will explode. Which could cause you to kill yourself.
Another thing about grenades are they can be used to stun your enemy. Say you have a poison grenade and don't exactly get a direct hit on the enemy. He will be stunned and this opens up a chance to use your lancer or hammerburst and down him.Last edited by areobee401; 09-22-2011, 11:03 AM.Comment
