Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

I'm typically not a big RPG guy but have to admit, both these games interest me. Is one or the other better for someone like me that's just starting out with the RPG genre?

For a starter I would go with Mass Effect. You do make some choices but its not as open ended as Oblivion, plus its a shooter if you want it to be. While I think Oblivion is a better game if you are at all concerned I would go with ME. Both are excellent games as I'm sure you know and you can't really go wrong with either imho.

Mass Effect has a much better story and characters but Oblivion can be alot longer if you do all the side missions and guilds. I liked both but Mass Effect is one of my favorite games ever so I would choose that.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Mass Effect is a better game to start off with the genre. Oblivion is a huge game with so much to do that you'll spend nearly 100 hours just going through it all. I was able to do everything in Mass Effect in like 30 hours, even exploring every single irrelevant planet in the game. What it lacks in length, it makes up for in replayability though.

Fallout 3 is also a nice game to pick up at some point.

I never played an RPG until Oblivion and I got hooked on that game. I'm recently getting back into it with GOTY Shivering Isles. I liked Mass Effect too.

I would pick based upon what setting interests you most. Future sci-fi or medieval castles and landscapes.

Re: Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

They're both very important games. I loved both, owned both and I'm very satisfyed I got to play and finish both.

The hard thing though would be to try and play both at the same time - they dominate everything else. So maybe get one and after you've beat it get the other. They're both DIRT cheap at stores - ME had a $2 trade value lol.

I think Oblivion is like a really long quest you enjoy all the way through w/ lots of exploration. ME is like an epic story w/ nail-biting decisions along the way...actually it's a lot like a choose-your-own adventure novel from the 80s  only way cooler and you can be a hard-*** if you want.

Mass Effect is more linear, and has shooting elements to help adjust to the RPG gameplay. After you beat Mass Effect two or three times, you should definitely go out and get Oblivion though.

Re: Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

This is a good question. Oblivion was the first console RPG i really got into. It's a fantastic game, but you have to be careful because it WILL suck you in, and you'll lose a lot of time playing. The story is good, not superb, but the scope of the game is absolutely mind-boggling. There's just so much to do.

Mass Effect is a spectacular game. I've never been a big fan of the space/sci fi genre, but this game is too good to pass up. The story is fantastic, and the combat is good, if you're trying to transition from more action-oriented games. The only issue there might be for someone new to the genre is the amount of dialogue. There's a LOT of it. It absolutely helps to build the story though.

I'm going to go ahead and throw in a 3rd option for you, and that's Fallout 3. Fallout is probably somewhere in between the other two in terms of RPG heavy or action heavy. Then again, with these games, it's all about how you decide to play. the combat is a lot of fun, the story is good, and it's also a huge game, especially with the additional downloadable content.

It's hard for me to pick ONE, because in my opinion, all three of them are MUST PLAYS. If you need to START with one of them, however---- ugh, I really don't know lol. I guess Mass Effect might be the easiest transition, but again, I have a very hard time picking one of the three. The good thing is, whichever one you pick, you really can't lose.

                      Oblivion kind of sucks.

I'd say if you decide to go with a fantasy RPG then go with Morrowind GOTY Edition instead of Oblivion. It's older, and it doesn't look as pretty - but it's 10x the game Oblivion ever will be.

Bethesda really dropped the ball on that one.

this is a minority report lol...

but seriously timmay I think I could guess your gripes with the game, but think about this: if you had never tried morrowind or any western rpg, I'm not so sure you'd notice or have those complaints. Like I really didn't dig the enemy leveling ...but the game was still awesome. My character was awesome too and I was champ of all the guilds.

Co-sign. There is a Morrowind cult out there that hates Oblivion, but most of the gaming world agrees that Oblivion is a great, great game. I put an easy 120 hours into that game without even really trying to beat it. My brother put in like 500.
