I beat the game and didn't have too many problems with it. When you take into account that fighting is about 10% of the game it didn't bother me. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely the weakest part of the game.

There is a glitch you can use get around the fights pretty easy if you find the combat system too difficult.

Just don't use weapons and spam uppercuts with "X". They can't defend them in time.
