Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

    Announcement

Eidos has revealed that a sequel to 2007's brutal crime shooter Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is on the way. Titled Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, the follow-up is set for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2010.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days promises an "even more intense story experience" as the notorious criminal duo make their way through Shanghai's shady underworld. According to developer IO Interactive, the game draws its inspiration from documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era to introduce a new visual experience that focuses on "intensity" and "realism".

Of the announcement, Niels J?rgensen, general manager of IO Interactive said, "Gamers are always looking for something new and that is exactly what they are going to get with Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. A special thanks to gamers worldwide for their feedback. They are certainly in for a shock as we, with immense pride, welcome back our two dear, violent and somewhat unfortunate friends."

Never played K&L, but I like their games (Hitman series) so hopefully this fixes the big annoyances I read K&L had.

The "teaser" trailer they released of them running around naked was hilarious.

Was the first game any good? I liked the idea of the game and the story but the reviews didn't sound too great.

Re: Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

I thought it was a lot of fun. I heard the online mode was great, but I never tried it since I didnt get the game until about a year and a half after it was out.

Single player and co op was great though, I had a lot of fun with it. It's just a regular 3rd person shooter really with some cool scenarios. robbing a bank, running from cops, etc.

The only issue I personally had with the game was the controls, and cover. getting into cover was automatic, but sometimes it didnt work exactly right. But it really wasnt a big deal, i could hide behind stuff without 'sticking' to it, so a lot of times i just avoided it all together. The controls are really just the aiming reticule speed wasnt exactly right. i just felt like i needed a lot of luck to aim it exactly where i wanted. It seemed like it moved too fast, yet too slow at the same time. there were sliders to alter it...but then it just became a sports game trying to find the 'perfect set'. so i just ended up leaving it on default and lived with it.

EDIT: I played the demo, and i liked it and was why i ended up getting the game. The full game is pretty much the same as the demo. Give it a shot, if you have fun with it, you can probably find the game for 20 or less nowadays.

I loved it. I played coop and it was the best $12 game ever. The story was excellent, but toward the end it seemed like they kind of ran out of ideas. The bank, jail, and club scenes were great. Get it for the story itself, this should've been a movie.

I think the bad reviews were from backlash to that dude who got fired, but whatever he was wrong.

Yeah I think I'll give it a look sometime before this second one comes out. For now though I'm focused on getting ACII, MW2 and NBA 2K10.

Did you play the first without co-op? I'm wondering if it would be as good playing single player?

I thought there was supposed to be a K&L movie with Nic Cage as Kane or Lynch (can't remember which one)?

Naw I played the whole thing with my cousin, we've been doing co-op since Contra and Double Dragon. It has some G of War moments where we split up, some you drive/I shoot, I don't wanna spoil it. Bruce Willis would be great for this. Don't know about Cage, does he curse?

on a side note, I wish Arkam Assylum would take from this.

Re: Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days First Look

The main character this time is the psychotic Lynch, the schizophrenic that played back-up and color commentary to Kane's central role in the last game. He's found his way to Shanghai, where he calls in Kane for one last big score. He calls it a done deal, with no hiccups expected, and so Kane joins up to make some cash to support his daughter.

Of course, Lynch is crazy. His well laid plans quickly go south and you'll find the duo embroiled in quite a bit of good old-fashioned third-person shooting. But before you ever get to the game itself, another aspect of Kane & Lynch 2 is sure to catch your eye. The visual style has seen a complete overhaul, drawing from low-quality amateur YouTube videos as inspiration.

How exactly does that work? Glad you asked. The camera follows close behind the action, shaking upon impact. Visual artifacts are present everywhere. Though the game runs in HD, a treatment has been applied to make it look like a streaming video. When you get shot, it looks like bits of digital information are lost and the screen becomes pixelated. The bright lights will oversaturate the "camera," causing light to bleed across pixels. You'll even get a little "buffering" screen to take the place of the initial level load.

The goal is to make it seem like this is a video being directed by the player, recorded on a small handheld digital camera. You'll stay with Kane and Lynch for the entirety of the roughly 48 hour time period that the game takes place, tracking the duo from fight to conversation and back to fights as it all unravels.
Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to pick up a controller and play. Had I, some co-operative action would have been in order. Like the original, this sequel can be played co-operatively in its entirety. This time, however, it can be played either offline with a splitscreen or online.

The combat looks roughly the same with a heavy focus on gunplay. The controls have been reworked, I'm told, with a special focus put on making sure the cover system really works this time. For those out of the loop, the cover mechanics in the first game didn't perform so well.
I didn't get a look at it, but I was told the well-received Fragile Alliance multiplayer mode will be back. In the original, this unique game type was a game of cops and robbers with a twist -- killing your fellow crooks and betraying them would increase your take of the haul at the end. The drawback was that those people would then respawn as cops tasked with stopping you. The more people you betray, the tougher it became to make it out alive. But oh the rewards if you did. We'll have to wait and see what Io has in store for the sequel.

In fact, we'll have to wait for a lot with Kane & Lynch 2 before we can draw any valid conclusions. I'm a fan of the new direction taken with the visuals, but simply telling me that the game mechanics have improved isn't quite enough for me. I didn't get a chance to play Kane & Lynch 2, so the jury is still out on whether the most wanting parts of the first game were indeed made better.
