What do you get when you combine the shoot 'em up talents of Gears of War maker Epic Games and Painkiller creators People Can Fly? You get Bulletstorm, a futuristic first-person shooter that lets you play as a drunken pirate.

Bulletstorm is that not-so-mysterious game from EA, Epic and People Can Fly, an all-new effort that's coming to the PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in 2011. The new issue of Game Informer magazine spills all the gory details on the new shooter, an issue that has started to show up in subscribers' mailboxes and then quickly online.

According to early details from the magazine, Bulletstorm will put players in the shoes of Grayson Hunt, formerly the leader of a black ops team named Dead Echo, now somewhat more pathetic as a drunken space pirate. One interstellar crash landing and run in with an old enemy later, Hunt will be shooting, kicking, sliding and wielding a fancy energy leash in first person action. It promises piles of bodies and a rain of bullets—I mean, just look at that cover!

Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski is set to make an announcement about Gears of War 3 on Monday—an announcement that was slightly spoiled by someone at Xbox HQ—and apparently reveal a second game at the same time. That's likely gonna be Bulletstorm.

So, if you want details before even Cliff is allowed to give them on Monday, read the new Game Informer.

Wow... very interesting. Also interesting that they are making a multiplatform title.

I wonder if we'll see Gears come to the PS3 someday.......

EA formally announces Bulletstorm for 2011 release

“Bulletstorm is the kind of game we love to make because it’s pure, unadulterated entertainment,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. “People Can Fly has created a wildly fun first-person shooter that looks gorgeous running on the latest Unreal Engine 3 technology, and the skillshot system is a welcome addition to the genre. We can’t wait to see how everyone reacts to seeing Bulletstorm.”

Bulletstorm tells the story of a futuristic confederation protected by an elite band of mercenaries: Dead Echo. When Dead Echo members Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato learn they’ve been working for the wrong side, they’re betrayed by their commander and exiled to the far reaches of the galaxy. In Bulletstorm, Grayson and Ishi find themselves surrounded by hordes of mutants and flesh eating gangs in an abandoned paradise. They have two objectives: get off the planet alive, and exact revenge on the man who sent them there.

Players step into the role of Grayson Hunt complete with an arsenal of over-the-top combat moves and outrageously large guns. Bulletstorm’s array of distinct ’skillshots’ produces unprecedented levels of frantic gameplay and yell-inducing satisfaction. The skillshot system rewards players for inciting mayhem in the most creative way possible. The more insane the skillshot, the more points players collect to upgrade their character and unlock weapons, which then allows them to execute even more creative moves and exaggerated skillshots.

IGN First Look

As the demo staff from Epic Games starts the presentation for Bulletstorm, the upcoming game they're working on with Polish developer People Can Fly (makers of Painkiller), they immediately set the tone with their... creative choice of language. Bulletstorm is "all about doing crazy ****," Epic's Design Director Cliff Bleszinski quips as Producer Tanya Jessen guides the game's gruff hero through the chaotic demo. And they're right, Bulletstorm really is all about giving your character the tools they need to do crazy stuff. While at first glance it might look like a straight up first-person shooter, Bulletstorm is really all about torturing your opponents and using both your body and the environment to kill them in as unique a way as possible.

Game Company Sends Us Sack Of Meat

The last time the powerful people at Electronic Arts sent our boss Brian Crecente something ridiculous in the mail, he burned it on his grill. Fitting, then, that they sent him some meat.

They are promoting Bulletstorm, of course! It's a shooter game in which you shoot lots of stuff, including people, rendering them, one would assume, into bits of ... meat? Yes, this bag indicates that it is full of Grade A Final Echo Squadron.

Crecente's not home, though. His wife reports that the bag of meat is gross.

Voice acting is extra cheesy.

But, the game looks pretty good. Explosions and bullet damage effects look great.

Aside from Reach this is my most anticipated shooter out of E3. Just getting tired of all the generic Battlefield: Call of Honor stuff that's coming out every year.
