Ghost Recon Island Thunder first impressions

    Boys:

Picked up Ghost Recon Island Thunder last night, and it's a keeper.

Yep, the gameplay is identical to the original Xbox game. But the new maps, based in Cuba, are really, really good.

There are two maps that are "instant classics."

One is a map in which you're spawned in tall sugarcane fields next to a beach. Paths are cut in the sugarcane fields, so it's like a giant maze. When you exit the maze, there is a big hill to scale, where you can get a great vantage point -- snipers' paradise! -- of everything. And there are some fantastic caverns on the inside of the mountain you can access in one spot.

The other is called "Polling Place." It's an urban map, presumably Havana. Tons of hiding spots, posts, columns, alleys, etc. Makes the "Embassy" from the original GR look pretty tame.

The only innovation I could see in about 2 1/2 hours of combined offline and online play was that the speaker is identified when talking online. A small walkie-talkie icon with the speaker's Gamertag appears at the bottom of the screen when someone talks. Great feature, as I always was stumped when a teammate said, "Hey, follow me" in GR, and I had no idea which teammate was talking, especially in games with dudes I didn't know.

GR Island Thunder is a damn good purchase at $39.99 if you're looking for a fresh take on the GR franchise or if you've never played GR before. Very fun offline and online, especially on XBL.

    Take care,
    PK

Although I only played about 2 missions, the game is still great. I fought on the beach which was pretty fun, and inside Cuba where you have to protect civilians from an enemy squad killing them to prevent them from voting. There are snipers on balconies that you have to look out for and the AI can get pretty rough with you if not careful.

All in all I thin k it provides a good challenge having to learn new maps, and where enemy troops are, and it is worth 39.99.

I went to a local gamestop and they tried to charge me full price for this game. I went to a diffrent one, and they charged me regular price. Go figure.

Good game. I absolutly loved the first one. Not a big fan of it online tho. But I have to pick this up sometime in the near future.

I was thinking about buying this game! Why don't you like to play it online? It sounds like a fun game!!! How is the replay value?

It's killer online. XBL play creates infinite replay value.

The only negative to online play is when 12-16 guys play together on a small map. Then the game becomes a clone of an Unreal Championship fragfest, which is no fun. The whole reason I play Ghost Recon is for tactics, stealth and strategy.

When I play in a room that fills like that, I leave and find a quieter room with more tactical players.

That's the only negative to GR online, in my opinion.

                            Take care,
