Good times. What an incredible experience it was when my friend first showed me GTA III. I remember him bringing an older GTA with him to Team Camp in the summer of '01 and I was totally unimpressed. But when III came out, what a unique and exhilarating gaming experience that was (particularly for someone whose primary system was still N64).
And that level you reference, was that called something like Bomb the Base or 8Ball something or other? I remember us struggling on that one for a while. But I swear, the ability to free roam an entire city, changing radio stations, discovering anything and everything... what a great time that was.
Jumped in on some GTA 3 yesterday and in a few hours was all ready to Staunton Island. I really miss some elements from that game, even if it's out of date a bit.
It's amazing how well I know the first part of the game. I played it so many times over after my sister lost our memory card.
I only died a few times and It was enough to make me remember why I love the GTA IV feature of just replaying the mission from the start.
I also cheated a bit on misson where you sink the Cartel ship in Portland Harbor. Instead of using the sniper rifle (no way to invert controls) I just dropped a few RPG rounds on the ship.. lol.
I remember playing to that point for the first time as a kid and being so devastated that the Mafia would try to kill me after what I did for them.
