I'm sure the Japanophiles will keep whining but that was a great trailer.

Re: New Devil May Cry Announced

                  IGN Preview

Those old hands will be glad to know, though, that this still feels very much like Devil May Cry. It's about style, long combos, and avoiding getting hit. Juggling enemies in the air is still the easiest and most fun way to climb the style rankings, and the different weapons complement each other with specific specialties, be that crowd control, interrupting attacks or heavy damage. Most importantly, though, it makes you feel cool. Nailing the flow of combat in a Devil May Cry game should make you feel like a god, and it looks like DmC achieves that.
It's an unfamiliar setup, but a lot of the fighting itself feels familiar, from the weapons themselves (Ebony and Ivory, Dante's trademark dual pistols, and his sword Rebellion) to the high-level technicalities of fighting, like jump-cancelling and parrying – refinements that Ninja Theory has spent a lot of time getting right. There's a grapple to pull enemies towards Dante and a rush move to push him towards them. Holding down the left and right triggers lets you use Angel and Demon weapons – like a scythe, or a heavy axe – at the same time as the sword and guns, switching between all four in long, flowing combos. You'll be able to equip different weapons to the Angel and Demon slots, and all of them are upgradeable.

The difference is that it's more transparent. As Dante slashes, smashes and shoots his way through a crowd of demons, a visible style ranking in the top-left of the screen actually shows you how you're doing, making the system easier to learn. The key to the elusive triple-S is variety, encouraging the player to use the full range of Dante's ***-kicking capabilities rather than spamming the same old attacks.
But DmC was entrusted to Ninja Theory on the expectation that it could offer something new to the series, and it's these new features that are the most exciting thing about the game. Foremost among them is the setting: the way that the demon world warps and changes around Dante is very cool indeed. The demon realm, Limbo, is a twisted, aggressive version of our own world that actively attempts to pursue and destroy Dante as you play. The streets themselves twist and warp all the time: cars roll backwards down buckling tarmac, alleyways suddenly close themselves off, fissures open up in the roads and your path can change or disappear completely at any moment.

What happens in Limbo affects the real world too – in the game's opening scene, we see a demon pick up a Ferris wheel at a funfair and throw it at Dante, ruining a lot of family days out as it uproots itself and devastates the pier in reality. Walking around that same fairground in limbo, you see signs saying 'Funland' or 'Hot Food' change to 'Spend Money' and 'Submit to Debt'. Glowing messages like 'Fall' or 'Kill Dante' flash up on walls and disappear again in seconds, and the outlines of people form momentarily out of whirling ash before melting away again. It really feels like the world itself is against you, and it's a far cry from the static Gothic environments of Devil May Cry games past.
Dante himself, always one of gaming's great anti-heroes, is more of a character in DmC than he ever has been before – largely because he has faults. Central to his character, explains Tameem, is the concept that he's not just a cool guy who does cool stuff, but a real person with history and personality behind all that attitude, albeit a person who fights demons with his top off on a day to day basis. He's got all the cool and sex appeal of his older, suaver self, but he's rougher around the edges: he really throws himself around during combos, stumbles slightly after weighty strikes, swears when he's hit, and often behaves like a bit of a dick, but that vaguely adolescent roguishness actually makes him more likeable. Everybody likes a bad boy.

A new approach and a new Dante are saving this series from becoming stale – after the disappointing Devil May Cry 4, it's encouraging to see DmC so full of vigour. It's clear that the people at Ninja Theory have spent a lot of time getting it to feel right without sacrificing their own inimitable style. The only question that remains is whether it'll work as well over the course of the entire game as it does in a 20-minute demo.

DmC is out later this year, and we'll be seeing a little more of it at this year's E3. Tameem hints that we haven't seen everything yet – there may well be one or two more surprises in store.

This sounds way more interesting than any of the other Devil May Cry games.

A demo is scheduled for November 20 (PSN) and 21 (XBL).

                                ...

Gamesradar: Devil May Cry hands-on - 6 ways it absolutely improves on the original series

Dante can still launch, juggle, evade, grapple and air-combo with just as much precision as before, and the ability to do so is still utterly demanded. It’s just that the ability to execute all of the above now feels far more immediately to hand.

Separate horizontal and vertical melee swipe inputs make launches, down-strikes, juggles and crowd control much more immediate and instinctive. The ability to equip two different melee weapons at a time, activating each for as long as the left or right trigger is held, makes tactical switch-ups and extravagantly varied combos second nature in no time. Ditto the use of trigger modifiers for Dante’s two complimentary long-range grabs, one of which pulls enemies towards him, the other of which zips him towards them.
You simply have not played a AAA action game with looks and atmosphere like DmC. In terms of production design, this game has a personality all of its own. Gone is any sense of the old series’ clichéd gothic fantasy, the game’s every location and monster now instead infused with a fizzing urban decay and stark, lunatic brutality.
Dante’s jumping controls are much smoother now and, coupled with his slick, tactile grapple abilities and smooth air-dash, they make exploration almost as appealing a prospect as the game’s core demon-battery.

DmC mixes combat with excellently paced, imaginatively executed set-pieces every step of the way. With no physical rules to the environments it presents, the game is free to throw anything at you, from architecture-warping, do-or-die platforms runs, to hallucinogenic Bionic Commando grapple action which forces you to rebuild and reshape the very environment around yourself on the fly. At times it almost feels like performing anti-gravity parkour through an architect’s cheese-dreams, yet it blends with the ‘main’ action so well that the overall gameplay mix feels more complete and satisfying than ever before.
Don’t think for a second that the new Dante isn’t every bit as cool and cocky and smart-mouthed as he ever was. He absolutely is, without even a hint of emo moping whatever the current internet perception of his character might be. What he is – along with the rest of the game’s cast in fact – is a character with real depth, believable human responses to events (despite not being human), and a layered, properly explored character arc.
What Devil May Cry 4’s combat soundtrack lacked in cutting edge quality, it more than made up for in repetition. Thankfully that horror is a thing of the past. DmC’s soundtrack – an original co-production between Noisia and Combichrist - is every bit as fresh, modern, exciting, eclectic, and pulse-poundingly affecting as DMC4’s wasn’t. And you won’t believe what a difference makes.
