    Kinect Your Shape Evolved

Disclaimer: I am starting a few threads about kinect games I am picking up next week. I plan on sharing what I have been able to find out about these games in hopes of starting a conversation to find out what others know about them that I have missed.

    Your Shape Evolved.

If this "game" delivers anywhere near what it appears to, it might be the best example of the kinects potential as technology and not just a game console novelty. The detail of your presence in game and the detailed skeletal tracking makes this potentially a true training platform. The game is broken into three basic categories.

Games. I wish there were fewer videos of this part of the game and more of the other two parts. You can find a million videos of the block breaking game. I have seen, block breaking, hulu hoops, and a block balancing game. This looks like it will be great for those days where you know you need to exercise but don't want to do anything remotely like an exercise.

Personal Trainer. A few videos out on this but not many that are great on detail. The hype machine says it is just like having your own personal trainer with thousands of exercises that fit your intensity and goals. The skeletal tracking shines here. I have tried yoga via DVD but never know if I am doing it right. The feedback in the game tells and shows you exactly what you are doing wrong with an up to the second exact scan of your body. Men's Health and Women's Health have a deal to provide special focus exercise programs. Hopefully fairly priced DLC can keep new exercises rotating in.

Classes. This is the part I am most hopeful about, but I have found very few videos about it. The idea is that you can take various classes; I have seen mention of yoga, tai chi, karate, kick boxing, etc; with the onscreen instructor and instant skeletal feedback. Done correctly this could be huge for me. If this program can actually come close to teaching at least some form of things like karate and tai chi then I can trick myself into spending an hour "learning" something like that a lot easier than spending an hour doing random exercise after random exercise.

On top of that the game offers what seems to be robust online reporting and tracking outside of the 360. Having another hook into the program will hopefully help keep me involved.

There are quite a few exercise games coming out for kinect but most seemed to be more focused on novelty. This one and EAs Sports Active seem to be the most serious about exercise. I went with this one because from what I could find out, it just seems like the better all around program for what I am looking for. EAs game is big on the heart monitor that it comes with. Since that doubles the price of the game EA seems to be focusing on telling everyone about their heart monitor and not about the game itself.

I appreciate it man, and why would he need one thread? they are all full games that he is going to buy.

That sounds cool...i really am interested in the 1to1 animation, skeletal thing you were talking about.
I could see myself getting games like this, as long as they stat track - that is huge because you can try to beat yourself without doing anything but the movements and the game takes care of the rest.

The other threads were about two other games coming out Thursday for the kinect. They had nothing to do with the kinect itself. Like I pm'ed the mod that deleted them, it is the same as having one thread for all xbox 360 games. Since they were deleted and not just locked I hope the can be restored. I put a decent amount of time into them.

seems to me it's better to just keep them in one thread. Really no need to spam the entire non gaming forum with a new thread right now for every kinect thing. It's the same as having one thread for all discussions ps3, or all discussions 360 in terms of the hardware.

Maybe when and if kinect actually takes off and has a leg to stand on by itself then it's time to start worrying about every different aspect of it.

But these are supposed to be separate fully realized games in some cases like Dance Central and your shape evolved. Minor things like the kinectimals or adventures I could see in a catch all kinect thread.

I am not talking hardware, I am talking individually branded and sold software titles. Just like we would do if these same games were only playable via 360 controller. If a game doesn't have enough play/discussion then it will just fall page by page just like every other non discussed game in the history of this forum.

I appreciate your work and opinion, Zalf. Please don't listen to the others. If a game is great or if it sucks, the separate threads will act accordingly.

Any input you have on the two dance games and this one is appreciated. Thanks!

                      Thanks it all worked out.

Most of what I have seen on the dance games were just videos of hot chicks dancing that got caught up in my other searches! You might want to take a look at the hour long hands on video that gamespot has up. That one really had the best info I found anywhere and they covered one dance game pretty thoroughly. It seems like the versions of the games they were using were much more recent than the game convention stuff

                          First workout session review:

Just finished doing setup and getting my first workout in. From a technical aspect, this game delivers everything I hoped for. I am very overweight and was worried that there might be some scan issues with that, but it reads my skeleton and displays it perfectly. I took my shirt off during the workout and it even picked up my crater of a belly button!

As others have reported, the most glaring thing that is missing is a warmup/cooldown procedure. You can use the Zen classes for that I guess but they really aren't designed for it and you would have to do some manual mixing and matching to cover the whole body. Maybe something will showup further into the game or get added as DLC.

Another part that could have flowed better was the step between the initial startup and the first workout. At startup the game does a scan and asks a few preliminary questions. Then it drops you at the menus to choose between the three areas of the game. I was most curious about the classes so I went there first. Next I went to the Personal Trainer section and it was obvious the intent is for you to go to the Personal Trainer before seriously hitting any of the other sections. The Personal Trainer does a more detailed evaluation of where your fitness level is and what you are looking for.

One thing that surprised me; besides how well everything worked; is how unlock based the game is. In the beginning you are pretty much funneled into a certain order of doing things. You still have a good many choices to start with but it starts with 10 or so choices and then unlocks into 100s of choices as work through each section. This might be intended to ease people into things but it feels awfully "gamish" for the workout portions of the game. I can see some people being frustrated with not having full access to the game from the beginning. There might be alternatives to the unlocks but they aren't obvious from the beginning.

I started out just wanting to take a look around and ended up getting a real workout in. If the game feel can keep me from realizing I am really just working out then that will be a great thing.

I will try to answer any questions for those trying to make purchase decisions.

                            Zalf,

could I just set it up to give me:

                            1) small weights workout

                            2) Ab workout?

Could I set up a workout that my class of 40 8th grade students in physical education could follow along with? (We have a ceiling projector and sound system in our fitness room)

I don't want a personal workout...I want a workout that everyone can follow?

Is that possible with Yourself fitness?

BTW, I set up Kinect and Dance Central today for my classes and they LOVED it! (picked it up at midnight last night)

watching Tottenham vs. Liverpool at White Hart Lane............2004 was a long time ago

There are several loading screens about exercises designed for use with small weights, particularly the Men's Health workouts.

I think I saw an abs scenario. I will try to remember to double check today.

It seems like it would work in a class scenario. Someone would have to be in sensor range to keep it from going to pause and to keep the "try to stay in rhythm" feedback to a minimum. I could see that being both a positive and negative reinforcement since it will be literal body image of that person on the screen
