I was given the game on PC the same week it dropped in Europe. I've since finished the game.
If you like shooting gallery's you'll love this game. By the end of the game I had killed over 500 people. Which is a bit high for a Marine rifleman.
If you liked Dragon Rising but thought nah this game has far too much freedom, Id rather trade that freedom away for a tethered experience. This is the game for you.
If you like terrible, just terrible AI, get this game! When firing you'll have squadmates walk directly in front of you, if that wasn't enough they'll also turn their backs to enemies while in the middle of a firefight and generally prove ineffective.
And that's just friendly AI, when patrolling through streets you'll see enemies walk right out into the middle of the road and just stop, and sometimes they'll get stuck halfway in the walls of buildings too.
If you enjoyed Dragon Rising but thought to yourself: I wish this game was Call of Duty, the devs have heard you and have delivered with "Bmods"/Perks and linear level design.
Joking aside(not really), the developers really departed from DR. They probably should retire the Operation Flashpoint moniker since they're not interested in making sequels to that game.
Though I'll try to describe the game better. And in list form!
Pros:
- bullet physics: some of the best I've seen in a game. The drop, richochets, overall good stuff.
- uhhh, some sounds, specifically echoes off surrounding mountains was realistic
- Damage Model(best ever): very detailed, explosions from grenades blowing people open, you can literally see parts of a ribcage or skull, even bones protruding from arms, etc. Also, no more heads being blown off by 5.56 rounds ala DR.
- Co-op is fun, best part of the game.
- Inaccuracy: at least in the beginning of the game. War is stressful and it's not easy to hit enemies.
Meh:
- Graphics
- Gameplay: it can be fun to shoot fish in a barrel but not that fun. Hence a lack of challenge or difficulty in the campaign.
Cons:
- AI: pretty bad, especially in close quarters. Typically by the end of a mission the 2 other AI fireteams will be dead. At range A.I. is a bit better but like I said it's a shooting gallery.
- Sounds: Sgt. Knox and his obnoxious marine speak grows very tiring. Also FX have been muted; bullets sound quieter than Sgt. Knox.
- Long wait during beginning of missions: 1-2 minutes or so riding in a chopper or the back of a HMMV doing nothing but listening to sarge.
- Perks are stupid and terribly unrealistic.
- Severe lack of weapons: fewer than their last game
- Departure from realism.
- linear
- smells bad
- No mods: devs took mods away from this game.
I played on PC maxed out settings, Experienced mode with all 3 aiming assists turned off.
My recommendation: If you have a solid PC go ahead and purchase dragon rising unless you want a milsim in which case purchase ARMA.
Dragon Rising has some good user-made modifications which enhance the graphics, the A.I., and adds new missions.
