Speaking as a console gamer only, I don't think there is another game out there that gives more value per dollar. If there was a game out there that's worth 100 bucks or over this would be it.

I think the only game that surpasses this one for me was the original mass effect. I found that in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart without ever hearing about it and bought it for 20. I think I put damn near 200 hours into that. Each of the other ME games I bought full priced and definitely got my money's worth.

For Skyrim though there are just so many ways to play it, and with the complete openness I would just sink hours and hours into it without really accomplishing anything game wise but loving every second of it. Hell I have like 5 characters all around level 30 just because I keep wanting to exerience it in different ways.

In terms of dollars-per-unit-time, you're probably right...but there's a difference between a game being a time-suck and being a really fun, great experience. I'm not saying Skyrim isn't, because I haven't played it (although I've been curious). I have played Fallout 3, though, and being a Bethesda RPG I assume that it's an analgous experience to Skyrim, albeit in a different setting. I could be wrong, though.

Anyway, I think Fallout 3 was the only game I ever put 100+ hours into without actually liking the game all that much. It sounds weird, I know, but I am a bit OCD with games, and I wanted to go around and do all the quests and play through the story, and once I invested a certain amount of time into, I felt obligated to continue so I just kept going...but at some point, maybe 20-30 hours in, it occurred to me that it was a bit of a chore, not really a fun experience, to play the game. If you like just walking around exploring and discovering new places, then I guess it's great. But the basic "action", when you boil it down, essentially the only "game" part of the game is the combat, and the combat just really sucked in my opinion in that game. The worst part of the combat was the melee combat, which basically didn't exist in any playable form in Fallout 3. So when I see Skyrim in action, and it's basically the same (except sans VATS)...it seems like if I pick it up, it'll be the same experience as Fallout 3. But maybe I'm way off.

Anyway, didn't post it to troll or anything, the comment just seemed to spark a thought and I ran with it...anyone here think I might be way off and writing this game off unnecessarily, or is it the case that you either like Bethesda-style RPG's or you don't?

If you are looking for a game full of constant action and dynamic combat then these RPGs probably aren't for you. For the Bethesda-style RPGs it's more about experiencing the world you are dropped into. I would also say the world in Skyrim is much better to be in than Fallout 3 if you are looking for different things to draw you in.

The big thing about Skyrim is the leveling system and the complete openness of the world. When the game starts you don't have to really follow the main storyline at all. My first playthrough I stopped after the mission that opened up dragons to the world and put in about 70-80 hours without ever advancing the main story past that. There is so much to do in the game in all the various cities and random encounters that happen. The first time I saw a Dragon fight some Mammoths and a Giant I just sat back in awe.

Skyrim could be boring to someone who wants a more guided approach with constant action. Instead it's about exploring the amazing world that was created for the game and doing things as they come along through your exploration. Random conversations with people that open up things for you to do, the crafting, building your house, and all of the other things that come along with just living in the Skyrim world.

Sounds about right; appreciate your thoughts. I think you're correct - I prefer games with a good story and fun/exciting battle system, which is probably why Fallout wasn't for me. I can appreciate that people like getting lost in the world doing ancillary/non-directed things, but that's not my preferred style of game. For those that love that kind of thing, though, these Bethesda games are heaven I'm sure.

was thinking about picking up the dlc for skyrim as its currently on sale.
- all 3 dlc for 1800mp (800+800+200 respectively) or $22.50

usually i wait on the goty edition of games to play dlc because i like having a hard game disk instead of using up hard drive space. but since i have absoultely know idea when or if bethesda will release a skyrim goty; and its on sale i was thinking of jumping on it.

1 question tho 4 anyone who can answer:

does downloading dlc work the same as downloading games of of live; where only the gamertag it is downloaded to can play it on other consoles?

i have multiple consoles in my home and im not the only person in my home who enjoys skyrim. basically if 1 tv is unavailable then we use a usb drives to play on another tv.

but i am the only person in the house with a x-live account so since it would be registered to me im hestitant to download dlc fearing ill be on the only person able to play the dlc across multiple consoles.

edit: would downloading the dlc to a usb drive work for multiple ppl being able to play the dlc across multiple consoles??

Dragonborn is hands down the best. Dawnguard is good too, but Dragonborn opens the game up even more.

Hearthfire is basically you building a house and having a family. It's OK, but doesn't add anything close to Dragonborn does.

I gotta say, M$ and Sony have really dropped the ball on patch 1.9. Still waiting on this to dive back into Skyrim.

As far as DLC goes, I liked the upgrades to Vampires/Werewolves given in dawnguard (except the no aggro for vampires thing), but it was too straight-forward IMO.

Dragonborn definitely gave more bang for your buck, but I wasn't particularly blown away by it as much as others were. I have a feeling I'll get more out of it my next play-through though.

Hearthfire is tedious, but very rewarding lol. There are some bugs (in all 3 dlcs) but I had a blast building my first house. Fair warning though, do not kill your bard without really thinking about it. Mine said something bad about my dog, and I "Fus Ro Dah"ed him, and then showed him the sword I used to kill Alduin, thinking that I could always buy a new bard... you can't lol.

I just finished the Dawnguard DLC, I really enjoyed it. Most of the locations you went to are so visually impressive and cool to just sit an stare at.

I prefer games with a good story and fun/exciting battle system, which is probably why Fallout wasn't for me. .

Fallout games have good writing/story/characters/choices & consequences ...Just stay away from Bethesda's version. (Fallout 3)

I just checked my playtime on this game. Last time I played was on 1/3/2012 and I had 181.10.39 in the playtime area....-_-.

My second character I made I had 24.01.27 play time in.

Lol, thats without any DLC's.

So I'm giving this one another go, and I downloaded the three add-ons. I just hit Level 9 and when I fast traveled to Riverwood:

Three vampires and hellhounds were killing everyone! I went in, cleaned up, and then got attacked and killed by the guards and Alvor.

I know this is related to the Dawnguard add-on, and I'm wondering if I run through that quest line, if these attacks will stop and I can start fast traveling again. I'd hate to be stuck with this through the entire game and be forced to delete it. For the record the route I'll go is:

Join the Dawnguard and kill those blood suckers.

This is the 360 version, if that matters.

I put easily over 100 hours into Skyrim on the 360 from release until about a few months ago.

Now I finally have a powerful gaming PC and one of the first games I got for it was Skyrim. The experience is infinitely better on the PC with all the mods that are out there, especially the graphics and UI mods.

It's like a whole new game, I can't believe I've been missing out on this for so long! This game owns my soul(along with College Hoops 2k8).

The best way to deal with the random vampire attacks is to reload a save when this happens. Fast travel to another place near to where you want to go and then time your next fast travel to the desired city when you know you will arrive during daylight hours. At low levels it is very difficult to stop an attack without losing friendly NPCs. Vampire attacks in Marketh are hell! I'm level 54 with very strong enchanted armor, jewelry and weapons. It is virtually impossible to keep every NPC alive during an attack. The town is set up to where it takes too long to get from one spot to another. Simple fix...reload a save.
