FFXIII was ok really wish it was more traditional style Final Fantasy game, I really missed exploring towns and buying things from different shops, also there leveling system was just plain weird without conventional character levels and how you level'd up really sucked not the whole sphere grid type system I really liked that system in FFX and XIII had a nice little variation of it, but level up guns and items just really was lame to me and the lack of items or money after each battle was a stupid idea. I also didn't like the whole race against time idea when fighting just to get a chance for a higher item drop...they just need to bring back enemies dropping items giving exp and money. The battle system was ok but you could find yourself just pressing one button hitting the auto command and you could win 90% of the time. They got there work cut out from the with this srqual and I hope it does a much better job than FFXIII at being a traditional jrpg. Square has really botched there first attempt on next gen with Final Fantasy 13 so I hope 13-2 is better and whenever versus 13 comes out I hope it's a classic

Famitsu Info:
- Story begins in Gran Pulse after the ending of XIII.
- The story will feel like it expands out from the after story that was included in the booklet with Xbox 360's Final Fantasy XIII International.
- Outside of Lightning, other characters will appear in the game in unexpected forms. Some will see major changes.
- XIII-2 is a full sequel. You'll learn some of the things that took place in the background scenes of XIII.
- The story will be more dark and mysterious than XIII's.
- The story will focus on the goddess Etro.
- The game will not have the pop feel of Final Fantasy X-2
- The battle system will be an evolved form of XIII's ATB system.
- They're listening to opinions both inside and outside of Square Enix and from outside of Japan regarding characters, story and interface.
- There may be a difficulty setting.

Re: Final Fantasy XIII-2
Sounds good. I keep getting confused with all of these new Final Fantasy games. Versus, XIII-2, and I think 1 other one are all supposed to take place in the same universe.
Hopefully they make some good changes to the ATB system.
Is this a 2011 Japanese release or will be be seeing it here in 2011 too?Comment

Difficulty settings would be interesting. Can't think of too many JRPGs that have any.Now Playing

Re: Final Fantasy XIII-2
The Tales games and I think Star Ocean both have difficulty settings. Maybe the Shin Megami series as well, but I don't remember for sure. Either way it should be interesting. I hope you get some kind of bonuses for beating the game on any difficulty in case you decide to play through again on a harder one.Comment

I don't know what to think of the trailer. Lightning appears to be in a separate world, but I think she was one of the playable characters in some of those scenes. Snow is gone, but other members of Team NORA appear to still be there. Serah looks to be playing a major role.
Of course I'll still be buying this day 1 though.Comment

Re: Final Fantasy XIII-2
New details from Square-Enix Members Blog:
XIII-2 has seen improvements and expansions in many areas (and these are just features we’re allowed to talk about right now). The designers of the game have made giving more choice to the player a key focus of theirs. Even in the small demo being shown off at E3, the level design features plenty of forks in the road, leading to hidden chests and lurking monsters, as well as wide open areas.
The developers also want players to have more control over their character and a larger variety of experiences in the game, which explains the inclusion of a jump button (the first in the numbered FINAL FANTASY series’ long history), which can be used to find hidden chests. Abilities will be gained throughout the game which will further allow exploration, making you return to areas you’ve visited before to see if your new skills can give you access to hidden areas and items.
Environments are filled with people, many of whom can be engaged in dialogue. A little speech bubble floating above their head will let you know if they have anything interesting to say. All of this dialogue is fully voiced.
Your objectives won’t always be straight forward. Sometimes you will be given a choice of which direction to go to reach your goal or of which order to perform certain tasks in. The E3 demonstration includes the choice to fight a large golem (we’re talking massive - like 20 storeys) or to investigate a mysterious device which has appeared out of nowhere. Investigating the device will lower the golem’s defences, making him much easier to kill, but if you fancy the challenge you can go straight into battle. We’re not talking too much about the game’s story right now, but we have said that the game takes place a few years after the events of FINAL FANTASY XIII. Lightning has disappeared, presumed dead, and her sister Serah is trying to find out where she’s gone, with the help of the mysterious Noel. You will not need to have played or completed FINAL FANTASY XIII to understand the story of XIII-2. It will help to know some of the backstory, but it has been designed to be accessible to newcomers.
For those who are fans of the franchise, you may be surprised and delighted to learn that Moogles are making a return. One such creature befriends Serah and has vowed to follow her on her quest to find Lightning. He has a few tricks up his sleeves, such as being able to reveal secret chests and other secret abilities which we will be revealing in time.
Another new addition is the recruitment of monsters. They will join your party and each species of creature will have a unique ability. You will be able to switch them in and out on the fly by changing the party’s Paradigm. Yep, the Paradigm Shift system makes a return, with some improvements and refinements. We’re not going into much detail on all the enhancements yet, but we thought you’d like to know that they exist.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Final Fantasy XIII-2
You can recruit monsters into your party? That might be interesting. If nothing else it's an attempt at something new in the series.
Guess I was wrong about Light being a playable character. That's kind of disappointing. She's my favorite character in the FF franchise.Comment

Eurogamer Preview and Interview
"We achieved big sales as expected but we received mixed reviews from gamers," producer Yoshinori Kitase told Eurogamer at E3 this week while discussing the anticlimactic launch of the much-ballyhooed XIII.
"The good points included the game system, which was popular, so we're intending to take it into XIII-2. On the other hand, the game progression was quite linear - that was the main criticism we received.
"All the aspects that didn't go down as well as they should have done we took very seriously and we came up with improvements, or replacements or additional features. Every single issue has been tackled."Kitase's areas of concern appear to be threefold. Firstly, effort has clearly been made to open the game world up and offer players more opportunity for exploration. A sequence we played through, that saw incoming duo Serah and Noel tracking down a giant causing trouble in Cocoon's New Bresha region not only offered multiple branching paths to venture down and side quests to take on, but opportunities to tackle a goal in a number of different ways.XIII-2's other major shift is in the game's approach to storytelling. Rather than bombard the player with lavish but momentum-sapping cut-scenes, Kitase and his team are striving to better integrate narrative and gameplay into a more seamless whole. For example, as you explore the game world you'll also trigger dynamic cut-scenes that play out in-game, should you elect to stand still and take them in. Conversely, you can ignore them and march on.
"With XIII the main concept was for it to be story-driven," explained director Motomu Toriyma. "As opposed to that, with XIII-2 the concept is player-driven. So with every single aspect of the game the player has to have some kind of access or they've got to be able to interact with the game in some way or another.Whether it will be enough to right the series' recent wrongs remains to be seen, but at the very least it should deserve a second look from those left cold by its predecessor's populist, linear twist on the franchise's decades-old formula. Toriyama for one certainly believes the brand is back on track.
"The core message we have about making XIII-2 is this game should be able to appeal and be enjoyed by those who bought XIII and enjoyed it, those who didn't buy the game and those who bought the game and gave it up because it wasn't good enough for them. It should have universal appeal to all Final Fantasy players.
"We're poised to make a really dramatic comeback with Final Fantasy XIII-2," he adds, confidently.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Developer Interview
RPGSite: One of the deepest criticisms that has been made was the lack of the traditional Final Fantasy town. In response in interviews, it was said by someone in the development team that making towns on a high definition system is actually quite difficult. So is that something that has finally gotten easier now? Have they developed ways to make it a quicker process? To make it a more painless process? Or can we still expect the towns to be smaller than what you would have found in games like Final Fantasy VII-IX.
Toriyama: Like Kitase said earlier, we did take it seriously that there was a huge criticism over no towns—we know people didn’t like it and so we took that and have towns in the new one. And you can explore the town and you can talk to all the people, and that will lead to other situations. Shops, as well now in XIII-2 you can find certain characters you can talk to and they can sell things to you and you can make purchases. I think if we created towns in the same way as we did for Final Fantasy VII-IX, it would be quite boring, and so it is very difficult. So with that we put an AI in every single person living in the town so they can do their own things. They may sit down and chat, or they may talk to their family members, or somebody they want to talk to, so they do their own actions. In that sense, it’s a quite different type of town you would find in a Final Fantasy [game].RPGSite: Will Final Fantasy XIII-2 be using a chapter based system, as far as story progression goes, because that was in Final Fantasy XIII, people thought that system made it too linear… will XIII-2 similar in that sense?
Toriyama: There isn’t an awful lot I can tell you on this subject, but we have changed that structure, because obviously people didn’t like it—there is a new one. For details on that, we’ll have to wait until TGS, but one thing I can tell you is that for the first time in the Final Fantasy series, XIII-2 will have multiple endings.RPGSite: My proper question is about side quests, and the end game. One problem that a lot of people had with the original XIII and some of the other recent Final Fantasy titles is that once you finish them, there really isn’t that much to do. In XIII there were side quests, but they were all these monster hunt quests—there was nothing else. So I’m wondering if they’re looking at post game content stuff to do after the game is over, and if they’re looking at more variety of side quests during the game as well.
Toriyama: We mentioned the multi endings earlier, so it’s in relation to that so we can’t tell you very much about it. For people who have already cleared the game once, from the second playthrough on there are replay values attached to it. It’s a lot like New Game+, it’s the same system, so there are items and features than can entice you to keep playing. As far as side missions, there are more side missions a bit like in Red Dead Redemption. So it’s not just the hunts, it’s the other types of missions as well. One of the criticisms we received about Final Fantasy XIII was there was not enough mini games, and people want to see more of them, so that’s some of the things we added as well.RPGSite: You talked a little about Red Dead Redemption. Can you explain how that influenced you?
Toriyama: Among the millions of games that came out last year, Red Dead Redemption was adored by a lot of Japanese developers, including ourselves. Our game is not as open-field as that game, obviously. We did take some inspirations, however. For example, missions can happen anywhere rather than having to go to a certain shrine, or base or something, and that’s from them. In this game you see lots and lots of chocobos and you can ride them. The kind of feeling you get as you ride the chocobo, it’s a bit like the way you ride a horse. It’s a really refreshing feel good experience, and that’s one thing we learned from the game.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
