Once sales start to decline, then things like cover and destructible environments trickle in during an effort to revitalize the series.

Changing the formula is the next step for this series, not changing the setting, which has been proven by activision to be something completely different.
I doubt it happens with this year's game. Although I think a lot of people are starting to tire of COD since Black Ops came out (I know I was one) and I could definitely see it happening in the next year or 2.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's a cover system? Is that like hiding behind an object or something?

Also, everyone seems to forget how great COD4 was, they tried to do too much with MW2 and it turned out to be an 3pic fail, but I honestly think if they actually ytake the time to work out all the bugs, and glitches ect, then MW3 has the chance to be as good if not better then MW1.

It's like what GTA IV, Rainbow Six Vegas and Gears of War have, assuming you've played any of those games. But yeah, it's being able to hide behind objects.

Interesting ideas, however I'm not really sure Destructible environments, or a Cover System would work in Call of Duty; (as it is right now) an Arcade Shooter, with fairly fast paced gameplay. It works in Battlefield because it is designed for Large scaled Battles, with Big maps that support it. Even the biggest maps in Call of Duty are fairly small compared to what Battlefield has.

Now a Cover system seems a little more possible, however you usually see those in Slower paced, Tactical 3rd person shooters... and COD for most players isn't really about being Tactical... although some game modes like Search & Destroy, Hardcore gamemodes are slower paced, and more tactical.

I think part of the answer for some freshness in the COD series is some new game types to play, obviously the staples of TDM, Dom, CTF, Search, Demo should still be in the game but some fresh and original playlists would be nice.

Isn't just simply kneeing behind an object almost as good as a cover system?

This line of thinking is exactly what I am talking about when I say the formula need be changed. When someone mentions Call of Duty, everyone immediately thinks multiplayer. The innate problem with this is that you cannot change the multiplayer drastically without ruining it. When you pound out game after game year after year without changing the key component, it gets stale. Makes you wonder if a subscription based multi-player only call of duty has some merit.

                New COD Engine Counter-Productive.......

I personally like Black Ops because of the guys I play with online but it really could use an overhaul. Physics with the guns could be much better and the unrealistic movement. Maybe even extremity hitting or something new. Of course, I'm a dreamer.......

If MW3 has zombies and less hackers, count me in. If it doesn't, it's a tough choice to get it.

Are they ever going back to dedicated servers?
