I agree with tigerx...are we going to ban Tom Clancy novels next? Those have a fictional, but realistic, universe that has terrorist attacks and whatnot. Games don't cause people to go nuts and pick up a gun, those people are pretty unstable all ready.

Agreed. Ive been playing violent video games and watching R-rated movies since 5 years old and never once have I ever felt the need to pick up a weapon.

      Re: shooters..

[sarcasm]What were those video games played by Genghis Khan and Jack the Ripper? I don't remember their names, but they must have been pretty violent to make those two guys do the things they did!

Or the Boston Strangler and Son of Sam? Damn, I must be having a mental block! I can't remember the names of ANY of the violent video games these psycho/sociopaths must have spent time playing.[/sarcasm]

It's suspension of disbelief and the ability to fantasize...taps into imagination and instinctive human predisposition to "hand-eye coordination honing" just as much as sports or "fantasy" games do. The underlying appeal springs from the same source with most all genres of video gaming.

I challenge you to download and play America's Army. I pretty much guarantee you'll see that the army is not glorifying violence or creating sociopaths (in fact, those with such tendencies in play are regularly banned for life). The game is presented in such a way as to demonstrate that "Ramboing" and wanton slaughter should not be part of a soldier's repertoire. From bootcamp to Advanced Weapons training to classroom medic training to deployment and combat, one must employ discipline, strategy, and care to be successful. Heck, you can even be a medic and never fire your gun, while still compiling Honor Points to advance in rank!

well, now that I think about it, I do think that video games cause us to do things we might not normally do. How many times have you guys gone outside and started jumping up and down hitting bricks with your fist after playing Mario. Let alone putting on a 'coon skin cap and trying to fly.

notice that i never said games would make people grab guns!

and still, i think there is a huge difference between games an movies/novels..
its a matter of active and pasive! when reading a novel or watchin a film, you think
about what is presented to you..you can reflect on it..
but when you play Vietnam, you ACTIVELY take the role of a soldier that kills people,
you replay one of the darkest chapters in US history..

think about it,.. everyone says the content of the game doesnt matter, if its war in vietnam, middle east or else where..
its all about the fun and "eye-hand coordination"..
ok then why dont program a game in which it is your task to fly a plane into some well known towers -Oooops!!!
"naah- i dont wanna recreate the death of some friends and family members of mine" - would many people probably think - and thats my point:
there is NO difference between such a game and the other war-based ones...recreating history in an
active way - virtually taking the gun and killin the enemy--
you compare this to a movie? i aint think so guys...

i dont wanna hate on people that play such games, but in my opinion a humans sense of ethic
sould prevent someone from havin fun playin them... you should think:
"danm, what i do here actually happend, and war is happening right at this moment.."
war is not fun and games..
think about it, would you still play these games if your father had been killed in iraq?

oh and as far as most people gettin historic knowledge only from movies goes, i think that is the case...

P.S.: huuh... that is hard explain since english in not my native language..

its all about the fun and "eye-hand coordination"..
ok then why dont program a game in which it is your task to fly a plane into some well known towers -Oooops!!!

P.S.: huuh... that is hard explain since english in not my native language..

notice that i never said games would make people grab guns!

and still, i think there is a huge difference between games an movies/novels..
its a matter of active and pasive! when reading a novel or watchin a film, you think
about what is presented to you..you can reflect on it..
but when you play Vietnam, you ACTIVELY take the role of a soldier that kills people,
you replay one of the darkest chapters in US history..

think about it,.. everyone says the content of the game doesnt matter, if its war in vietnam, middle east or else where..
its all about the fun and "eye-hand coordination"..
