In my opinion Skyrims the best game made in 2011, but not ever. For me that title goes to Diablo 2, and soon to be Diablo 3 whenever it comes out . Skyrim is the only non-multiplayer/sports game I've bought since the old Metal Gears.

I will never understand people fascination with a game having to have multiplayer in order for them to enjoy it. IMO online play is killing the quality of the gaming industry.

Games are coming out with less substance and more flash this generation. The art of story telling and making your game last more then 6 hours is starting to become very rare.

I have seen it in sports games over the years. Seen it in the past 3 Call of Duties, the last 2 Assassin Creed games. Even the Unchartered series took a hit in quality ever since they add online mode to it.

That is why I am skeptical about Mass Effect 3.

I mostly agree with what you said but that's not always the case. A few of your examples are off as well. Uncharted 2 was a massive leap forward from UC1 and they added MP. Also, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood was a pretty good step forward and a deep single player experience and that was their first year adding MP as well.

I completely understand your stance GMSS, look at Batman Arkham City for a perfect reminder that single player only focused experiences can be amazing.

BUT..............there is a huge place for multiplayer. We being sports fans understand the competitive nature. The thrill of beating someone else with a brain and not some CPU running on 1s and 0s. So the multiplayer angle is extremely important.

What I will say is that companies need to shell out more time and resources to development. Reason games lack in one or the other is from taking time and resources away from one to work on the other. Designated development teams working ONLY on multiplayer and designated dev teams working ONLY on singleplayer is the only solution to the issue. The problem is companies choose to cut corners and do like the COD's of the world does. Create a smaller 5 to 6 hour singleplayer thrill ride, then spend all the other time on their main draw the multiplayer.

This is what happened to 12 to 15 hour single player games! Sad thing is how do we wake them up to this unfortunate trend???

12 to 15 hours used to be short games.

I love Skyrim, think it's super-immersive and it's the Game of the Year, and think it offers a tremendous amount of gameplay value. But don't think it's the best game ever made. At the same time not sure which game I'd designate as being greatest ever. Perhaps Mario 64 or Zelda OOT because of their influence on game development overall. Then again, maybe a game doesn't have to be influential to be deemed best ever.

Still would have a hard time saying Skyrim is best ever

Sadly, I doubt we will ever stop this trend. Too many people have short attention span nowadays. I know so many people that literally buy games for the online part of it only.

If they can't play online with it, they won't buy it.

I wouldn't say I have a short attention span. I just don't feel like a game that takes 3 hours to beat is worth $59.99. For me it's mostly about the money. Most single player games I just rent, beat, and then return. For me multiplayer games and games like Skyrim offer a lot of replayability which make me feel more comfortable spending 60 dollars. And there have been a few games like the Metal Gear series and Heavy Rain that have an amazing story and are just too good to pass up on, but for the most part a lot of games just seem short to me.<O</O<O</O

Re: Skyrim: best game ever made?

I'm a sports gamer at my core, but I can get bored of that rather quickly so I sprinkle in different games to break up the monotony. So I got Skyrim after reading all the good things, about it on the board. It's the first Elder Scrolls game I've played I've been impressed, but I can't go that far, there are a lot of games that come from genre's that I dont usually play that impress me, but having not played previous versions I don't really know what all has been improved.

It is a great game, but I can't give it that title just yet.

Guess I'm an idiot. I rented mass effect 2 an played the hell out of it because it was great. I won't buy a game unless I can play online with it. Online gives it replay ability. In any game the a.I. is never good enough or can't change on the fly. I play online because I know the other guy is capable of out smarting me. Again I will rent any good rpg an play it but I won't buy it because after I beat it what's left?

Skyrim is really really good, but not sure it even beats out the Witcher 2 as far as RPG's this year. 2 different games, but both equally enjoyable.

Baldur's Gate 2 still trumps skyrim to me as far as best RPG's of all time go. A testament to BG2 is that it is still very playable today.

Second the Metal Gear Solid reference. I feel that way about Uncharted too. I've beat every game in each series 3+ times (minus Peacemaker, which I'll soon do).

Being real, I haven't played Skyrim but with all the hype it has the game seems to be one of the best ever. I can't really say which game is the GOAT because I haven't played many non-sports games but my favourite was GTA San Andreas, it was the game which I had the most fun playing it.
