I actually agree with goh on that second point. Not sure what game he's showing off in the 2nd screenshot, but a lot of 16 bit era games stand up better graphically to me than something from the Xbox/PS2 generation. It's just the graphical style of the games used. I could probably play something like Chrono Trigger or Super Mario World 30 years from now and still be fine with how it looks, but if you take a dated game with 3D models from PSX, Dreamcast, or Xbox its going to look significantly worse.
RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?

My post was NOT intended to be sarcasm. I literally had no idea what was going on there.
It was like his post entire was in Aramaic.I understood not a word. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
Get Persona 4 and play it on easy. Best JRPG released in a long time. On easy it doesn't ask of you anymore than a Final Fantasy battle system would, but you get a better story. The exploration outside of combat is linear, so it's near impossible to get lost or to not know what you're supposed to do next.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Love the story though (so far at least, I'm actually playing through it on and off right now), I'll agree on that.

Not essential on easy and it's linear in terms of time. I think it's absolutely a newcomer friendly RPG on easy. The systems are explained very well and are simplistic, yet deceptively deep.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

What about Scott Pilgrim vs the World? It has rpg elements as you can level up and can buy stuff to level up as well plus its a retro side scroller beat em up.

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
I just noticed you have a Vita DJ. If you decide to get Persona 4, I would wait for the Vita version coming this fall. It's going to have a bunch of new stuff: remastered visuals, more voiced dialogue, online features, and new story content.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

May end up getting P4 Golden anyway for the portability and extra content....lol.

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
I'm thinking FFX and Kingdom Hearts for the PS2 and if I get another DS (either buy another DSLite off eBay or Craigslist or buy a DSi new), I'll get Chrono Trigger.
The DS looks to have a good library of RPG games I could get into:
Mario & Luigi: Inside Bowser's Story
Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (I played the other DS Zelda game and really liked it)
How are the Dragon Quest games ... too tough for a rookie like me?
What about The World Ends With You?
I'd also take games similar to Hotel Dusk: Room 215. Not an RPG but those story-based games are a blast.Currently Playing:
MLB The Show 25 (PS5)Comment

Good call, Flawless. I will likely wait for the Vita version.

I never could get into the Dragon Quest series, but I doubt you would have any trouble playing those. Maybe try IX on DS, otherwise, I wouldn't bother - slow and tedious are words that come to my mind when describing that series.
The World Ends With You has an overwhelming amount of mechanics and it takes some time to really come to grips with the combat.
If you like Hotel Dusk, you should definitely check out 999.

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
LOL....whatever version of Jack Frost that is, it looks like a Pokemon.
Oh crap....I said the "P" word in a starter RPG thread.
Actually I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, especially when the DS came into the discussion. The series was probably the gateway RPG for most of my generation (and ones to follow). It doesn't get much simpler than Pokemon in the beginning, and yet there's a reason there's a 260 reply thread about it burning up this very forum right now. It's addicting as hell, and probably the only reason I don't play it anymore is that I've more or less swore off Nintendo. The Sony systems and PC take up enough of my time, there'd be nothing left if I went for Microsoft or the big N.
And, playing off what Flawless said, there's a Dragon Quest for the PS2 I can't believe I forgot to mention. I put many, many hours into Dragon Quest VIII, and it's also very easy to get into (pretty much all Level-5 RPG's are). The Dragon Quest series itself is a throwback to the old RPG days, which is where the slow and tedious part comes in. I would say you'll get a pretty good idea whether you can handle a game like that if you play any of the SNES-era RPG's and like them.
But hey, at least your main character can turn Super Saiyan!
