I know this is some debate over whether it is a real RPG or not, but Fallout is always worth a go. Keeps me entertained for hours. Adding to the First Person RPG, Borderlands is also very good.

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
If you have a Nintendo DS, or Gameboy Advanced. There was this RPG series I played way back in the day, it was one of my favorites. It was called Golden Sun, and it had a sequel.
After some searching I found it:
I spent days playing those games as a kid. They are fairly old so it might be hard finding them, but I'm sure a local Game store might have a few used copies.Last edited by Feared; 06-05-2012, 06:58 PM.Minnesota Vikings

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
Also using Psynergy (the games version of Magic) is a little different twist, and you also need to use it in the Overworld with interactive environments, and puzzles.
However I don't feel that it would be too difficult for a newcomer to play. The first game eases you in slowly, and explains the nuances in depth, and deep down all the core RPG mechanics are still there: random encounters, turn based battle system, with physical attacks based on weapon, armor stats, and also a magic casting system. (Psynergy)
Now that I think of it, these games were way ahead of their time in the GBA era..and had some pretty good graphics to boot for being on a portable. With some really unique ideas, I wish Camelot/Nintendo would bring this series to Console.Minnesota Vikings

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
I remembered I had bought the whole whack of PSX FF games so for kicks fired up my favorite of the bunch.
Still my favorite intro:

It does have some more advanced game mechanics than most basic RPGs. The Djinn system, allowed you to control magical creatures based on the 4 main elements which you could then harvest their powers, and change your Classes by having different characters equip them.

I never really liked Fable, tbh. Not sure, guess it wasn't up my alley. As far as Skyrim, it is amazing, but I don't think it's necessarily the best place to start for a newcomer to the genre. Though it is less complicated than Oblivion and Morrowind were.Comment

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?
If you're talking more about JRPG's (Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Kingdom Hearts, etc.) than Western Style ones (think Mass Effect, Skyrim, etc.), I'd recommend FFX. I know some people have issues with its protagonist (really, you could say that about a lot of the FF's), but the game does a good job of breaking a new player in, as most of the later FF's do.
The battle system itself is pretty newbie-friendly since it's turn-based instead of the active-time battles that many JRPG's use. That means you won't get attacked while it's your turn and can think about your next move.
There isn't a whole lot of customization until probably about 10-15 hours in (and you start acquiring key spheres which let you break off a character's designed growth path), Even then, your party members won't ever go way outside of their defined classes (in other words, your spellcasters won't be doing 9999 worth of physical damage). You have to play to their roles to be successful in this game. And you're not going to screw yourself by building the wrong attributes - the leveling and growth system simply doesn't allow it by design.
One thing though - this game is slated for an HD re-release, probably sometime this year. It might be worth your while to wait for that.Comment
