I'll believe it when I see it

I can't see any of the new systems ship without hardrives. Big mistake if they leave it out, or charge extra for it. That's like taking wheels off of cars to save money in my book.

Just got EGM. There is a short thing in the rumor section about Xbox 2. Nothing important, until the bottom where it says: "The Q has also picked up word on his sensors that for a needed space/cost savings, this time around it will not include a hard drive."

I find this impossible to believe considering MS and Sony consider their future gaming consoles to be portals for home entertainment or a version of the set-top box.

A hard drive is fundamental to that strategy. Future consoles will play games, play MP3s on the hard drive and act as digital video recorders (TiVo) on the hard drive.

I think EGM is wrong, as usual.

I think a more likely rumor is that MS or Sony might team up with Tivo of something and offer a new breed of console. I would buy any one of these consoles that had a built in DVR. I would prefer to give my money to MS because it's atleast a US based company.

I think its the right thing to do from a technical point. HDs have moving parts and fail often(lifespan of about 5 years on average). It would be wise to have it so users could buy a normal IDE HD of their chooseing and install it themselves. This way when it failed they would not have to send their xbox in ect. The wey things are now, you will have Atari 2600s that will outlive many many xboxes.

Likewise, if you could use the Xbox as a DVR then being able to install your own HD would make it easy to choose the HD size you wanted.
