The only reason I couldn't get into Neptunia was the battle system, specifically the attacks. It just seems entirely pointless to have all of those different button combinations - it's a level of customization that goes beyond anything I could ever use. I guess you don't have to actually set but a few of them, but I'm kind of OCD about having all those unused ones. Also not a fan of not being able to directly heal yourself (at least in the early part of the game) - that's not something I want to leave up to the AI's whims. I loved the humor in the game though. I still have the first game and haven't totally given up on it though.
But I'll go ahead and throw my niche, low-scoring JRPG out there....Atelier Ayesha. This is my first dive into the series, and it's making me want to go back and try Totori and Meruru. I'm not that impressed with the story (although it's enough to keep me playing) and it's a very slow-moving game, but I love the item creation aspects and the combat is decent enough. It's unique because you can actually rely on the items you create to be a primary source of damage in battle - and since Ayesha herself is the only one who can use any items, she can fill several different roles in battle. The item creation itself actually drives the plot forward, and it's very deep with a laundry list of different properties and traits items can be given by combining them (and in some cases, even the order in which you combine them can change those traits!). Really liking a lot of the music tracks in the game, too.
As one of maybe 2 mostly blind purchases I make in a given year, I'm certainly getting my money's worth out of it.
