The more I think about it, the more I realize maybe Xbox Next doesn't need a hard drive.

Unless you're ripping a lot of custom soundtracks on the drive, how many people even scratch the surface of the drive's capacity unless you own a shedload of games and play a lot of franchises and memory-hogging modes?

I owned 13 Xbox games at my high-water mark, had every Ghost Recon Island Thunder and Rainbow Six map, had a ton of ESPN NFL rosters, settings and a season and downloaded the Kapalua course for Links 2004, and the hard drive still said it had 50,000+ blocks left. That's a ton of unused space.

I think MS figured a lot more developers would take advantage of the hard drive for more than just memory, using it for part of the gameplay like Blinx the Time Sweeper. Well, that hasn't happened.

So it makes sense for MS to use large-capacity flash storage, hopefully a hell of a lot more than 8 MB but nowhere near 8 GB, to save money for Xbox Next. Gates may have Grand Canyon-esque pockets, but MS still is losing money on every Xbox sold. Stockholders don't like to see that gushing red ink.

Honestly, how many of you guys have even used 4 GB of your Xbox hard drive? How many have even used 1 GB? I think 80 percent of the gamers out there would be pleased as punch with a 1 GB flash device.

    Take care,
    PK

yeah good point, i mean maybe the hard drive should only be like 1 or 2 gb.
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

Re: More evidence Xbox2 may not have a hard drive

I just can't see flash memory replacing all the duties of the hard drive.

First of all, all Xbox games use the HD for caching. This makes for faster loading of games and gives it a significant (imho) advantage in that area over the PS2.

For those that don't know, the Xbox HD has 5 partitions.

Partitions X, Y, and Z are each 750 MB. They're reserved for game data caching for the 3 most recently played games.

Partition C is 500 MB. It's the boot partition and is reserved for the dashboard.

Partition E takes up the rest of the HD space and is used for ripping music, downloads, game saves, etc.

Also, if it turns out that PS3 will have a HD, then this whole conversation is moot, as MS will have no choice but to include one in the next Xbox.

Flash memory is still too expensive compared to HDs. It would not make economic sense for MS to go that route.

One thing i dont understand is that even if they go with a 8GB hardrive, how expensive can that be, sure alot cheaper than when the original xbox came out. I think they would be making a HUGE mistake if they took the HDD out. One of the main selling points of Xbox was the fact u can download new levels for games like Splinter cell, or get newe Mechs in MechAssualt. When Xbox2 comes out, i am sure that that would be more ways the HDD can prove very useful.

For example, PC users who have Nba Live can go to websites and dl new pathces or new faces for the game, to make the game somewhat more realistic, whose to say this can't be done with the Xbox2.

IMO, the potential of the HDD is very high, and MS would be making a big mistake if they go in a different direction.

An 8 gig HD is prob pretty expensive today in bulk as they are not made anymore.

Its just like I can go buy a 1.5G Athlon for round the same price if not cheaper than I could buy a 800 MHZ one.
